**Main Purpose of the Post**:

- To be responsible for the day to day running of the library
- Lead on whole school reading events
- Delivering and resourcing reading interventions for the whole school literacy programme
- To support with the form tutor programme across the whole academy and any other reading programmes

The primary purpose of this role is to foster a love for reading within the community, create a safe and welcoming space for all individuals, and encourage reading for pleasure. The librarian will be dedicated to promoting literacy and lifelong learning by providing access to diverse collections, engaging programming, and personalised support to readers of all ages. By fulfilling this role, the librarian will inspire a lifelong love of reading, contribute to the personal and educational growth of community members, and create a vibrant, supportive library environment that celebrates the joy of reading.

**Professional Responsibilities**

**Creating a reading culture**:

- Curate and maintain a diverse collection of books, magazines, and other reading materials that cater to varied interests and reading levels
- Organise and lead engaging reading programmes, book clubs, and literacy events that highlight different genres, authors, and cultural perspectives
- Develop and implement strategies to encourage reluctant readers, and support avid readers in exploring new materials
- Use data to track reading trends within the academy
- Lead whole school events to raise the profile of reading
- Provide personalised reading recommendations and readers’ advisory services to help students discover books that match their interests and preferences
- Host author talks, storytelling sessions, and other events that highlight the joys of reading for pleasure
- Collaborate with schools, community organisations, and other stakeholders to promote reading and literacy initiatives within the broader community
- Support all reading intervention programme that occur within the Literacy faculty

**To enhance the teaching and learning across the academy by**:

- Carry out all duties and responsibilities linked to the everyday running of the library
- Maintain and continue to refine and improve the physical environment of the library
- Organise and lead KS3 and KS4 students in shadowing major literary awards, establishing and developing links with the organisations responsible for such awards
- Develop standards of literacy by promoting academic rigor and mastery towards reading across the academy
- Support staff and students to enable library users to identify, locate and access the information and resources they need
- Use data to support any library initiatives as instructed by the director of literacy

**To continue the development of students by**:

- Develop student participation in the running of the library
- Staff lessons in the library as appropriate
- Deliver effective library lessons ranging from providing staff with relevant Sparx report data to listening to students read
- Offer extended learning opportunities including lunch clubs and literacy groups
- Monitor and reward Sparx readers during library lessons
- Support intervention taking place in the library
- Support students with homework where necessary

**Library environment**:

- Ensure the library environment is inclusive, accessible, and welcoming to all members of the community, regardless of age, background, or ability
- Foster a respectful and supportive atmosphere where students feel comfortable exploring their interests and seeking assistance
- Implement policies and practices that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of student and staff
- To ensure that the library is an exciting and stimulating centre of learning by staying up to date with new releases and student requests

**Engage with the Community**:

- Build relationships with community members, schools, and local organisations to understand and respond to their reading and literacy needs.
- Actively promote library services and programs through outreach, social media, and other communication channels
- Gather and analyse feedback from students to continually improve library services and programming

**Outcomes**
- Appraising the success of initiatives relating to students’ reading habits and achievement
- Report to line manager on student progress
- Offer workshops and resources on various literacy topics, including digital literacy, information literacy, and media literacy
- Facilitate access to online databases, e-books, and other digital resources that support reading and learning
- Encourage students to develop their literacy skills through a variety of engaging and educational programmes
