**Job overview**:
We require someone who is conscientious and capable of careful and accurate work with excellent customer care skills. Applicants ideally should have previous laboratory experience but in house training will also be provided to the successful applicants. Basic science knowledge particularly chemistry and biology are needed for this role as is the basic knowledge to be able to safely handle hazardous chemicals. Good and accurate data entry skills are also required along with basic standards of numeracy and literacy.
**Main duties of the job**:
PAWS has been formed from the merger of Pathology Services at Salford Royal Hospital and Wigan, Wrightington and Leigh Hospitals.
Biomedical Support Workers are required to provide support to the Clinical Biochemistry department. The duties are varied, and include specimen reception, entering patient data into the laboratory IT system, assisting with the laboratory handling of most types of specimens and sending material to other hospitals. Other tasks include: preparing reagents and solutions, daily maintenance of laboratory equipment, maintaining laboratory archive systems, cleaning laboratory equipment and general housekeeping tasks. There is a requirement to be able to lift heavy objects such as boxes and waste and to be able to push trolleys.
The hours of work are 37.5 per week, to be worked over Monday to Friday inclusive and will involve some early starts and late finishes. The department provides a 24hr service and it may be necessary to participate in an out of hours rota in order to provide service requirements.
