This is
an exciting opportunity to join North Yorkshire's friendly and dynamic public
health team who have well-established relationships with other council
departments, the local NHS and the voluntary section. The postholder will be involved
in the creation of healthier places to improve the health and wellbeing in
North Yorkshire and make healthy choices the easy choice. We are committed to learning across the health and
care system and to our own staff development.
The post holder is expected
to facilitate effective linkages between the public health agenda and
strategies related to the wider determinants of health e.g. healthy
workplaces, housing, the environment, climate change, community safety and
planning.
Working for Public Health will
give you an alternative perspective on town planning, housing, transport and
environment, as well as useful career experience.

Our work is diverse, with a
range of functions that include the promotion of healthy environments,
commissioning of a range of services (e.g. sexual health and drug and alcohol),
and partnership working to improve health outcomes within North Yorkshire.
The post holder is expected
to work autonomously on a number of strategically important programmes and will
demonstrate a depth and breadth of knowledge across health improvement and
prevention including operational commissioning, performance management, project
management and the development of key public health programmes/service.

**The role**

North Yorkshire Council is a newly formed unitary authority serving a population
of around 615,000 residents. This is an exciting post capitalising on
opportunities that the Council’s new growth agenda presents for creating
healthy places for our residents to live, work and socialise.
Under the guidance of
the Public Health Strategic Lead for Healthy Place Shaping, you
will support the delivery of a large and complex programme of work to
promote health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities through addressing
the wider determinants of health (namely the built and natural
environment).

**Skills & Experience**

To be successful you will have:

- A commitment to
working collaboratively with a diverse range of
stakeholders and a passion for promoting good health and wellbeing.
- An understanding of spatial
planning and the wider environmental determinants and how
they can promote health and reduce inequalities for our residents.
- Experience of working with a Local Authority, Public Health or
multi-agency partnership setting.
- Influencing and negotiation skills used effectively and
persuasively in support of organisational aims and objectives.
- Effective interpersonal skills, including establishing and maintaining
good working relationships with internal and external partners.
- The ability to present complex and sensitive information to both
specialists and non-specialist audiences and individuals.

Experience of preparing and
developments to consider the impact of planning decision making and major
regeneration schemes has on health and prepare responses to mitigate impacts
where possible and seeking to achieve positive health outcomes.

We are seeking a public
health professional who is passionate about building
partnerships across and beyond the council to make North Yorkshire a healthy
place and embed health at a strategic level as part of “upstream
prevention”.
