Job overview

This is a full-time permanent post created by promotion of an existing team member. The post holder will provide a flexible and highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy service within the NUH SLT service to Neurosciences, Spines, Major Trauma and Critical Care. This is team of 6 SLTs including a Clinical Specialist SLT. It is supported by an SLT assistant. There is a FEES and videofluoroscopy service and training can be provided. The team are core members of the tracheostomy weaning process. The team provides a service across both NUH's campuses: City and QMC. The team has very close links with the MDT and there are opportunities for service development and to enhance your leadership skills

Main duties of the job

The postholder will

work alongside other Band 7 SLTs in the team and the Clinical Specialist SLT with designated responsibility for team leadership and clinical care

provide a flexible and highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy service within the NUH SLT service to acute Neurosciences & Critical Care**_ _**

be responsible for providing highly specialist SLT assessment, formulation and diagnosis, requiring advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and interpretation and analysis, and subsequent therapy/management programmes within the designated specialism

strategic developments within their specialism, in liaison with their line manager.

development and delivery of training and professional mentorship in their specialism.

provide highly specialist clinical expertise and team leadership within specialism

Working for our organisation
- NUH is a large teaching hospital, across 2 sites: Queens Medical Centre and City Hospital. The Adult SLT service works across both sites, working alongside a separate ENT service. We work across a very broad range of acute specialties including Healthcare of the older person, Respiratory, and Critical Care. NUH host a number of regional services including Neurosciences unit, Major Trauma Centre, a comprehensive Stroke unit, Trent Cardiac centre, Burns Unit and Upper GI services. We also have SLTs within the Neuro-rehabilitation unit, the MDT neuro-rehabilitation outpatient services, and an SLT service for Neurology outpatients.Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
- Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification.
- Additional postgraduate training up to master’s degree (or equivalent)
- Health and Care Professions Council License to Practice
- Registered member of RCSLT

Experience

Essential criteria
- Significant post graduate experience within this specialist client group, working with dysphagia and communication difficulties autonomously and without direct supervision
- Experience in evaluation of evidence based practice, audit, and benchmarking
- Experience of service development and service planning
- Experience of supporting and supervising less experienced staff
- Experience of working in the acute setting
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency
- Tracheostomy competency

Desirable criteria
- Advanced post-graduate training in dysphagia
- FEES/VF competency
- Experience of ventilator dependent patients

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
- Excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy skills
- Able to communicate complex condition related information to patients, relatives/carers and other clinical/social care staff where there may be barriers to understanding e.g. language barriers, speech, cognitive problems
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers
- Excellent presentation skills both written and verbal.
- Well-established negotiation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrate leadership ability
- Able to maintain accurate and comprehensive treatment records in line with the trust policy and departmental procedures

Analytical and judgement skills

Essential criteria
- To independently provide highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment, formulation, intervention and advice service for individuals, their families, and MDT professionals, using highly specialist knowledge underpinned by current evidence-based practice
- Ability to assess complex information, formulate a diagnosis and plan patient management using clinical reasoning skills and a range of treatment options, based on well-established knowledge of a
