**Primary Location** UK-ENG-London

**Job** Economics

**Organisation** 532000 - MONETARY ANALYSIS

**Job Posting** 19-Apr-2023, 8:53:52 AM

The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people.

We are a diverse organisation. Each of our 4,000 plus people are committed to public service and dedicated to promoting the good of the people of the United Kingdom.

The Bank’s network of Agents across the UK provides a key support for all of our core purposes by talking directly to businesses and other stakeholders to gather information about the economy to inform policymakers. We also play an important role in representing the Bank around the country.

We are recruiting for a Deputy Agent in the Greater London Agency.

**Department Overview**

This role involves meeting lots of different people, many of them senior business leaders, listening to their experiences, and representing the Bank of England effectively.

The Agency network consists of 12 regional Agencies located around the UK. We work closely with businesses and community organisations, including schools and charities. We regularly interview our contacts, focusing on what decisions they are taking and how they see the economy evolving. The information that we gather is an important source for the Bank’s senior policy makers, who regularly accompany us to meetings with stakeholders.

**Role Description**

You would be part of a small team (an Agent and three Deputy Agents) in the Greater London Agency, based in the Bank’s headquarters in Threadneedle Street, Central London. You would gather, report and analyse economic intelligence from regular meetings with your contacts. These would be businesses and other organisations in Greater London (roughly the area within the M25). You would meet them through a combination of face to face meetings at the business’s premises (spread throughout the region) or at the Bank of England headquarters, and also virtual meetings by phone or video call. Our contacts choose how they would like to talk to us. Each meeting is carefully documented so that the information can be shared with colleagues.

You would also regularly help to organise and chair ‘panels’ of ten to twenty businesses, collecting information and views from each attendee.

You would contribute to analysing and distilling the information that we gather to create an overview of current economic developments. This involves reading through the intelligence gathered across the country on a specific topic (for example, consumer spending, wage pressure or credit conditions) and summarising the general trend. That is then presented at a range of policy meetings at the Bank. You will be expected to build and work with a network of stakeholders within the Bank to ensure our intelligence feeds into the Bank’s economic assessment.

You might also be asked to organise a survey of our business contacts on a specific topic and help to analyse the results.

Team members regularly give presentations to our stakeholders, which summarise the Bank’s economic assessment and key policy messages. We present to a range of audiences around London - business events, trade body events, to employees and to schools and universities. Depending on your experience and preferences you will be asked to contribute to or give these presentations.

We also organise meetings between our senior policymakers (including the Governor) and our local contacts, so that they can hear first-hand the views of businesses and communities.

For more information on the role of the Agents and their contributions to the Bank’s work please see the Quarterly Bulletin article “The Agencies and 'One Bank'; and also Agents' summary of business conditions - 2023 Q1 | Bank of England.

**Role Requirements**

This role would suit people from a range of backgrounds who are confident in and have a strong interest in business and economics.

As a minimum you will need to show:

- The ability to work independently, and also collaboratively within a large team.
- A good understanding of the Bank’s approach to monetary and financial policy and the ability to keep pace with key economic developments.
- Skill in interviewing and building rapport with stakeholders.
- Ability to digest large amounts of information efficiently, and extract key messages.
- Ability to present information clearly and engagingly both in writing and in presentations.
- Good judgement and discretion - able to represent the Bank of England diplomatically.

In addition it would desirable if you could demonstrate:

- An understanding of the London economy and business community
- Analytical skills for assessing qualitative and quantitative information. This could include an interest in data science, using Excel to analyse data, and possibly the ability to code in R.
