Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a substantive post for 4 programmed activities commencing ASAP.

The appointee will join an established paediatric rheumatology team in Nottingham. The team is well respected and enjoys a rich and positive history. The post holder will have responsibility in delivering tertiary paediatric rheumatology care at Nottingham and across the East Midlands region.

This post is created with new NHSE funding, which approved a joint Nottingham and Leicester bid to develop a comprehensive East Midlands wide paediatric rheumatology service.

Applicants should be eligible for entry on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT at interview. Applicants should have MRCPCH or equivalent qualification.

All consultants are appointed as Clinical Teachers by Nottingham University.

Main duties of the job

The clinical activities of the service include 3-4 clinics in two out of three weeks. The clinics are a mixture of new referrals and follow up, and inflammatory and non-inflammatory patients. In addition, there are Transitional clinics (both in-house and with the adult Rheumatology team), Joint Injection pre-assessment clinics, Musculoskeletal ultrasound clinics and combined clinics with other specialties - Dermatology (separate clinics for psoriatic JIA and CTD/vasculitis), Paediatric Respiratory team, Uveitis clinic with the Paediatric Ophthalmology team, Fever clinics with Immunology team and Outreach Clinics and services. In addition, there are two Nurses clinics a week and monthly annual review clinics done by the nurses and therapists for holistic assessment with focus on general fitness.

There is a weekly joint injection service, alternating between a general anaesthetic list and an Entonox/ list, which cater to patients from across the region.

The activities in the service week include, ward rounds, day-care reviews, assessment of inpatient referrals, virtual homecare prescribing clinic, virtual day-care prescribing clinic, vetting new referrals, response to all clinical queries, telephone consultations (outreach, primary care, other specialties) and Entonox joint injections.

Working for our organisation

The unit is one of the dedicated regional centres for paediatric and adolescent rheumatology in the UK and provides care to children across the Trent region and beyond. The Paediatric Rheumatology Service started in Nottingham in April 1984 and has developed since then into an evolving clinical network. Over the years, there has been significant expansion in the service such that it provides care for children throughout the East Midlands, based on an In-Reach, Out-Reach model. There are currently regular clinics in Derby, Mansfield, Lincoln, Grantham and Peterborough. The teams working in these localities work closely with the staff within the Queen’s Medical Centre and share clinical care, teaching, professional development, audit and research. We have had significant level of funding and approval from NHS England to develop an East Midlands wide service, and jointly set up new multidisciplinary services in Leicestershire. Nottingham will be the regional lead to provide such services across the region.

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register in Paediatrics and/or paediatric rheumatology
- CCT expected within 6 months of interview date

Professional Qualifications/Development

Essential criteria
- MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent

Desirable criteria
- Higher professional degree

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
- Ability to deliver a Tertiary Paediatric & Adolescent Rheumatology service
- Completion of a specialist training programme or equivalent in Paediatric & adolescent rheumatology
- Ability to run a joint injection service
- Ability to support a multidisciplinary team
- Evidenced technical skills as described in the job description
- Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals

Desirable criteria
- Specific training in communication skills
- Specific training in patient safety and/or human factor
