The Academic Services unit has around 1,200 staff and sits within the Professional Services Portfolio, under the leadership of the University Secretary. We are responsible for the operational delivery of an outstanding support service to the Open University’s students, wherever they are, and whatever their circumstances. This post sits within the sub-unit Student Recruitment and Fees (SRF) and Tutor Experience Support & Services (TXSS).

**The role**

The Head of Student Fees is a key position within SRF & TXSS, overseeing the work of the Student Fees department, leading and motivating a large operational team of c.80 colleagues, including five Senior Managers. You will ensure key business targets are met, monitoring key performance indicators and driving continuous service improvements, including systems development, to support policy and operational change.

You will liaise with key external stakeholders and provide senior representation on operational aspects to inform strategic financial support matters,, including the Student Loans Company, the Department for Education and other funding bodies, to help shape Higher Education policy that will be favourable to the University and its students.

**Skills and experience**
- Significant experience of leading a large operational team with particular emphasis on motivating staff to set and achieve high performance standards ideally within the Higher Education or Financial Services sectors
- Manage, train and develop staff within the agreed cultural values and performance management framework
- Proven ability in building genuine and open long-term relationships with external and internal stakeholders, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve strategic and operational objectives
- Experience of producing accurate management information with the ability to identify and interpret trends or patterns and recommend courses of action that helps shape future strategy
- Experience of forecasting and managing budgets and resources effectively
- Ability to be pragmatic when working with existing systems and ensuring that they are fit for purpose by developing short-term, tactical solutions and driving change when needed.
