Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Smile For Life Children’s Charity Full time

**Young People Co-ordinator**

Smile For Life Children’s Charity established its very first Café Beam in 2014 in the heart of Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. In 2018 following the success of the café, we relocated to a prime site on Gosforth High Street and more recently opened a second cafe at Ouseburn Farm. This development has significantly increased the profile of our work and indeed our customer base, as we are increasingly becoming a destination for great food, excellent service and a unique experience in two vibrant locations within Newcastle. In 2020 we gained our allotment on a site in Rectory Road, Gosforth and established Green Beams, providing youngsters with opportunities to enjoy work placements in the great outdoors; planting, nurturing and harvesting produce to be used in our cafes. The aim of our work placements is to provide youngsters with learning difficulties and disabilities, skills, confidence and knowledge as they leave education and prepare for the world of work or a more fulfilling adulthood. The cafés and allotment have been a huge success and currently support 75 youngsters each week on regular work placement. We are looking to recruit a Young People Co-Ordinator who will be responsible for driving our work placement programme across a diverse range of partners, and ensuring every young person reaches their full potential within their role whilst gaining structured and nurturing support as they do so. Monitoring and evaluation of our youngsters during and at completion of work placements is a crucial part of this role to ensure effectiveness and development into the next phase of their lives.

**Role Description**:

- Recruitment of young people for work placements within Café Beam, Green Beams Allotment and other placements as the charity grows and develops.
- Oversee the induction process for new young people commencing their work placement.
- Facilitate and document the training and continuous development of every young person on work placement at Smile For Life.
- Work with the Volunteer Co-ordinator to optimise volunteer support to prioritise the training and development of every young person.
- Develop, implement and maintain robust monitoring and evaluation tools to measure the impact of every young person’s work placement, using an overarching training plan, and report these to the appropriate person.
- Establish, manage and strengthen relationships with education providers, parents, carers and other employment organisations, to ensure meaningful work placements, continuous recruitment and to be seen as work placement provider of choice.
- Maintain accurate records of all young people’s details, attendance and achievements.
- Be responsible for maintaining a fully staffed work placement rota for both cafes and allotment.
- Be the primary point of contact for all young people, their parents, carers and supporting organisations.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and legal requirements in Café Beam and Green Beams Allotment, relating to all young people on work placement and the responsibility to ensure the physical and mental wellbeing of all young people whilst on work placement.
- As designated Safeguarding Officer, ensure knowledge, skills and qualifications are up to date and appropriate procedures in place.
- Identify opportunities and support young people to transition into employment, volunteering, or further training opportunities.
- Promote our work placement opportunities through social media, networking, event participation and community engagement.
- Raise the profile of Café Beam and Green Beams Allotment through corporate partnerships, pop up cafes, networking events and catering events and by supporting volunteering opportunities within our café and on our allotment.
- Provide feedback to colleagues and stakeholders when requested.

**Essential skills and qualities include**:

- A patient and approachable manner with the ability to deal with sensitive or difficult situations.
- A positive, can-do attitude.
- Excellent organisational skills.
- Self-motivated and forward thinking.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills in order to work with young people with additional needs, volunteers, partners and colleagues.
