Higham Hall is an 1828 Grade II listed neo-Gothic manor set in c.6 acres of landscaped gardens with established woodland which includes a number of specimen trees, a pond fed by a natural stream, and the remains of a kitchen garden. It is a tranquil, rural location that overlooks Bassenthwaite Lake with expansive views of the northern Lake District Fells, and is within easy reach of the towns of Cockermouth and Keswick.

As part of a small dedicated team, the Gardener is a key role, responsible for the management and maintenance of the grounds around Higham. In practice you will often work alone, supported by a small team of volunteers. You will therefore need to be able to bring strong horticultural knowledge and relevant practical experience to this role. Specialist training (i.e. chainsaw licence) can be provided.

You will inherit a garden that has been managed for many years in a traditional manner, and you will continue to manage the garden to provide access and enjoyment for students. At the same time you will work closely with the Principal to develop and gradually implement a new plan for the grounds that combines enhanced habitats for wildlife and for people, working closely with nature and the site. We are looking for someone passionate about sustainability and biodiversity who can embed these principles in the management of the gardens.

Public engagement is also key and we would expect you to play a part in this. Higham is a residential college for lifelong learning: we welcome over 3,000 students a year and would like to make the garden an integral part of our unique learning environment, developing courses that make use of the gardens. We also want to welcome day visitors to learn from and enjoy our outside spaces.
