**Equine Veterinary Nursing Assistant**

**Norwich**

Part time, fixed term (six months plus one month rolling)

20 hours a week

(two to three days across 7.30am - 4pm)

With availability for the on-call night rota

(Post includes weekend working 1:4,)

A unique opportunity has arisen in our Veterinary unit at Hapton HQ, for enthusiastic individual to join the vet unit to assist with daily nurse clinics, the administration of medication, basic theatre duties and general housekeeping on a part time fixed term contract.

**Nursing Assistant Salary**:
£10,940.80 per annum for over 18s’

Rising to £11,148.80 per annum for over 18’ after successful completion of probationary period.

**RVN Qualified Veterinary Nurse Salary**:
£12,240.80 per annum for over 18s’

**Job Purpose**

Main responsibilities: to provide, as part of a team, 24/7 veterinary care for the equine residents of Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

**Clinical Duties**
- Assist with daily nurse clinics.
- Assist the veterinary surgeons as required.
- Work under veterinary instruction at all times.
- Monitor intensive care patients and administer emergency first aid.
- Assist with euthanasia.
- Administer oral and topical medication as requested.
- Assist with radiography as required by the veterinary surgeon.
- Carry out laboratory tests.
- Ensure surgical equipment is fully functional, clean, sterile and ready for use.
- Maintain diagnostic, laboratory, anaesthetic, and dentistry equipment.
- Ensure patient treatment and information is recorded accurately.
- Assist in theatre under direction of the veterinary nurses and veterinary surgeons.
- Carry out housekeeping duties.

**General Duties**
- Ensure all entries in the diary are dealt with efficiently and in order of priority.
- Liaise with colleagues efficiently and promptly.
- Ensure telephone and radio calls are answered immediately and professionally.
- To work as part of a team.
- Ensure the veterinary centre has a high standard of cleanliness and professionalism at all times.
- To assist with the provision of an on-call service when required.
- Members of the Veterinary team are required to drive company vehicles within working hours.

**The post also carries governance and statutory responsibilities**:
(i) Health and Safety aspects of the team’s work, within the office and externally

(ii) Data protection and appropriate confidentiality

**Person Specification**

Essential Criteria:
Education / Qualifications
- Minimum GCSE or O-Level equivalent, including mathematics, English and science

Experience
- Experience of working in an equine environment and proven practical equine experience
- Proven ability to handle equines with behavioural / handling issues

Skills / Ability / Knowledge
- Understanding of health & safety and COSHH
- Ability to problem solve and prioritise tasks
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Accurate recording and administration skills
- Ability to follow and work under instruction as directed

Qualities / Attributes
- Excellent communication skills
- Flexible approach and willingness to work outside of usual working hours
- Good organisation skills
- Ability to work as part of a small close team
- Ability to stay calm in emergency situations
- Working under pressures in demanding environments

Desirable Criteria:
Experience
- Experience of working in a veterinary environment

Skills / Ability / Knowledge
- Understanding of drug use & safe handling of medication
- Knowledge of equine first aid and TPR
- Knowledge & experience of laboratory procedures
