Job description

The appointed individual will play a key role in developing and executing internationally leading research in bacterial microbiology in the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions (CHMI). This research area is complimented by existing research groups in the CHMI, utilizing wet-lab and bioinformatics approaches to the study of microbiota interactions with the human host. The new lecturer will have a strong research track record and work towards establishing a research program that attracts external funding in line with the expectations of a probationary lecturer. They will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, including the Centre’s MSc programme, ‘Microbiome in Health and Disease’ and the Faculty’s undergraduate programs, and undertake such administrative, managerial, and other duties expected of a lecturer, as agreed with the Head of Centre and Dean of Faculty.

This post will be offered on an indefinite Contract on the Teaching & Research pathway.

This is a full-time position.

Key responsibilities

**Education**:

- Contribute to teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students including designing teaching material, using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.
- Supervise student projects and, where appropriate, placements.
- Act as personal tutor to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students
- Identify areas where current provision needs revision or improvement.
- Contribute to teaching-related activities such as setting and marking examinations.
- Train postgraduate students and postdoctoral research staff
- Undertake or update professional skills as appropriate and relevant in support of teaching excellence

Research:

- Undertake nationally and internationally leading research & maintain a consistently high-level output of publications.
- Work in the field of the microbiology of microbiome interactions with the host
- Develop a peer reviewed and funded research programme
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate students in research projects
- Build and maintain international and world-leading collaborations as relevant to the research field
- Attend and present at international conferences
- Publish research in peer-reviewed academic journals.

Administration:

- To take responsibility for particular areas of administration as agreed with the Head of Centre and Faculty Dean.
- Sit on appropriate committees and contribute to the welfare of the college and the academic community.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Centre and Faculty Dean.
- To demonstrate significant leadership, providing guidance and encouragement to other members of staff.
- To participate in courses, conferences and other activities associated with personal and professional development.
- The duties of the post outlined above are not exhaustive, and the postholder will be expected to be co-operative and flexible, undertaking such administrative and other duties as may from time to time be reasonably expected of a Lecturer at King’s College London.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria
- Postdoctoral experience encompassing training and supervision of undergraduate and/ or postgraduate students
- Teaching recognition, such as associate Fellow HEA or teaching awards
- Solid record of publication of high-quality research outputs in leading peer reviewed academic journals, with first and Corresponding author papers
- Sound knowledge of research methodologies, governance requirements, and awareness of importance of Research Culture and Research Integrity
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
- Invitations to present at conferences, and chair sessions
- Experience of writing grants (Fellowships, PI on small grants, Co-PI on larger grants)
- Motivated with ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

- Experience in academic administration
- Experience of public engagement/outreach
