**Pay Rate: £10.79 per hour PAYE
**35-37 Monday - Friday, normal working hours**

**This opening assignment is for 4-5 mo**n**ths**

**City: DURHAM**

A Cleansing Operative is required to deliver a safe, efficient and effective combined ‘street scene’ and street cleansing operational service. To carry out a range of street cleansing and ‘street scene’ duties to create a clean, safe and green environment within a designated area of work that is delivered through Waste Services

Key Responsibilities:

- Operate basic plant and machinery/powered and manual hand tools appropriate to level of training.
- Drive vehicles and operate all plant and equipment required to undertake cleansing maintenance and repair work undertaken by Waste Services.
- Take appropriate steps at all times to ensure the safety of the public and co-workers.
- Erect/remove and fix/re-fix highways furniture andequipment.
- Undertake street sweeping duties, removal of litter, debris, fly-tipped and escaped waste and chewing gum.
- Undertake cutting back of shrubs, trees and vegetation.
- Carry out minor repairs/maintenance to footpaths and land.
- Remove dead animals in accordance with council policy.
- Collect and dispose of discarded needles/sharps

Qualifications:

- Training or qualifications relating to the operation of specialist equipment or machinery

Knowledge:

- Knowledge of horticulture.
- Basic knowledge of council’s environmental enforcement policies.
- An awareness of customer care.

**Experience**:

- Experience within a Cleansing Environment.
- Experience in the operation of plant or equipment used within a cleansing, or other relevant environment.
- Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.

Skills & Abilities:

- Basic literacy skills.
- Ability to work in a logical manner
- Ability to work on own initiative.
