**Job summary**:
Do you want to shape the way statistics are produced and used to maximise their public value?

The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) is the UK’s independent regulator of statistics. Our role is to enhance public confidence in statistics. We are part of the UK Statistics Authority, but independent from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

What we do matters now more than ever. High-quality relevant statistics are essential for understanding the world around us. As the statistics regulator our vision is simple - that statistics should serve the public good. Decision-makers need good statistics, and to serve the public good statistics need to be clearly explained for a wide audience.

Our work involves being agile and responsive to uphold the principles of trustworthiness, quality and value in the production and use of official statistics.

**Job description**:
**The role**

We are a small, enthusiastic regulatory team at the heart of the government statistical system, with a single aim to ensure that statistics serve the public good - ensuring they are produced in a trustworthy way, are of high quality, and provide value by answering people’s questions.

Our team of independent regulators in our topic domains work together to embrace this challenge. We are currently seeking a committed individual to lead one of our eight topic domains - examples include Children, Education and Skills; Population and Society, Labour Market and Welfare; and Transport, Environment and Climate Change.

You will lead regulatory projects, ranging from responding to emerging areas of concern about the production and use of statistics, through to long-term reviews. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to OSR’s wider strategic projects and to undertake regulatory work in our other topic domains.

The role presents a great opportunity to work closely with people at the centre of the government statistical system on high-profile projects. You will use and quickly enhance knowledge about a range of public policy topics, synthesise information from different sources, analyse complex and incomplete facts and figures, and present your findings and judgements to different audiences.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and dynamic working environment and our small friendly team draws on a range of backgrounds and professions. We operate a hybrid working model and fully support flexibility with colleagues already based across the UK working from home and linked to one of our core locations in Newport, Edinburgh, Fareham or London.

The frequency of attendance at our offices is agreed with you as relevant to your role. If placed at our Fareham core location, you may be required on occasion to travel to London for team events. Travel costs would be covered from Fareham to London for those events.

We expect all OSR team members to be able to travel to meet with stakeholders and colleagues based at other sites as needed. It is likely that such travel would be infrequent.

**Person specification**:
**Responsibilities**

The main responsibilities for the post are set out below:

- Leading stakeholder engagement, horizon scanning and work planning.
- Leading assessments, compliance checks and thematic reviews. Based on the Code of Practice for Statistics, you will need to make sound judgments about the trustworthiness, quality and public value of statistics, and how these might be improved.
- Responding to emerging issues in the domain by producing advice for senior managers that finds and addresses issues that may have been raised with us or that we have spotted.
- Drafting high quality internal briefing and documents for publication.
- Contributing to the development and work of the wider OSR team, by actively taking part in regular team events, delivering ad hoc tasks and organisational development projects to further improve how we work. Leadership and development of team members is very important, and you will be expected to not only manage your development in conjunction with your line manager but contribute to the professional development of your colleagues.
- Project managing those projects you are leading and supporting other projects in your area being led by colleagues.
- Being an ambassador for our work and building networks in areas you are working on.
