**Job Purpose**
The post holder will support students transitioning into higher education. They will do so by contributing to teaching, assessment, and course administration within the foundation years (Year 1 and Year 2) of Life Sciences courses and by supporting student engagement with learning in the higher education environment. The post holder will contribute to the development of courses and will engage with scholarship to enhance learning and teaching practice at course and institutional level. They will contribute to the provision of summer schools, to outreach activities and potentially to some additional duties, as deemed appropriate by the Associate Dean for the Life Sciences.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. Make significant contributions to the teaching, delivery and administration of foundation level biology courses and summer schools. This will involve student support sessions and laboratory leadership/delivery with the aim of promoting effective student learning and engagement. 2. Prepare, lead and supervise practical and tutorial classes advising students on the skills, methods and techniques they must acquire for each course, and as aspiring biologists.
3. Contribute to specific tasks in the planning and organisation of foundation level courses as identified by the Associate Dean for the Life Sciences.
4. Contribute to the development and delivery of innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to foundation years student learning.
5. Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
6. Develop expertise with the University of Glasgow’s VLE (Moodle).
7. Collaborate with colleagues on assessment and examination processes to ensure clear and robust procedures are in place.
8. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment and examination requirements and criteria, and timely and constructive feedback on assessment to students to support their learning.
9. Undertake routine administration associated with teaching and assessment of foundation level courses and associated summer schools.
10. Engage in continuous professional development as appropriate for the role.
11. Be involved with recruitment and orientation events as required.
12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.
13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Associate Dean, Life Sciences Portfolio.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience.
A3 A broad knowledge and understanding of foundation level Biology/Life Sciences.

**Desirable**
B1 Knowledge of education-related quality assurance practices.

**Skills**

**Essential**
C1 Evidence of excellent or appropriate organizational and administrative skills.
C2 Excellent oral and written communications.
C3 Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills with evidence of the ability to interact constructively with a range of colleagues and students.
C4 Evidence of an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
C5 Self-motivation.

**Desirable**
D1 Evidence of a sympathetic approach in dealing with students’ problems, both academic and personal.

**Experience**

**Essential**
E1 Demonstrable teaching experience in a relevant area of Life Sciences.
E2 Scientific/professional writing skills such as those required to write a scientific paper (or make significant contribution to the writing of), to write educational literature, to write documents that convey complex information in a clear, concise and unambiguous manner.
E3 Experience in communicating complex or conceptual ideas.

**Desirable**
F1 Experience in contributing to the design, review and/or enhancement of course content or assessment.

**Terms and Conditions**
Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum
The posts are full time and open ended.
