SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY ASSISTANT (Bengali speaking)

Newham’s Speech and Language Therapy service has some exciting news and we are looking for new speech and language therapy assistants to join our expanding SLTA team. We are looking for innovative, creative, passionate and committed assistants to join our team.

We are looking to recruit a Band 4 Speech and Language Therapy assistant who can work closely with our Bengali speaking families by offering sessions in Bengali and supporting our Bengali speaking families on the hotline.

Our team works with children with complex needs, autism, language delay and developmental language disorders as well as children who stammer, have a hearing impairment or voice disorders. Most children who we work with are Under 5 years old.

We are based in community clinics and work in a variety of settings such as nurseries, Children’s Centres and education settings.

Our team works very closely with other agencies such as Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, doctors, psychologists and health visitors. We are a committed, creative and supportive team consisting of Speech and Language Therapists and SLTAs.

1. The post holder will be a member of the Early Years Speech and Language therapy service which includes Community Clinics and Complex Needs Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) Team. They will have a focus on delivering services to children with speech, language and communication delays and disorders delegated by qualified SLT staff.
2. The post holder will be able to support the local Bengali speaking families in areas such as supporting the SLT assistant in assessment and intervention sessions, workshops and training sessions where the family’s primary language is Bengali; being part of a rota of SLTAs running an advice hotline and providing advice in Bengali.
3. The post holder, under the guidance of a registered SLT, will be responsible for a defined population of service users including homes, nurseries, clinics and children’s centres.
4. The post holder will be skilled in developing, delivering, implementing and evaluating a range of delegated speech and language interventions including groups, 1-1 interventions and support packages.
5. The post holder will assist in all aspects of caseload management and carry out clinical administrative tasks.
6. The post holder, following essential training, will work alongside SLTs to plan, organise, run and evaluate training sessions, parent workshops and the advice hotline.
7. The post holder will support the smooth running of the SLT department this may include tasks such as audit, user surveys, maintaining resources and equipment.

Based at the child development centre, in Stratford in the London Borough of Newham, close to the Olympic Park in the heart of London’s East End (with excellent transport links with the rest of London and Essex). The children’s speech and language therapy service has a strong multi-agency work ethic with other services both within the trust and with partner agencies, and offers services across a wide range of care groups in the borough.
1. To have a sound understanding of the role of SLTs and use this knowledge to assist them in the planning and delivery of SLT services to clients and families/carers attending the clinic.
2. To work independently in a variety of settings carrying out delegated intervention packages and programmes, writing reports and updating clinical notes.
3. To support the Bengali speaking communities who attend Speech and Language Therapy services to access assessment, intervention, groups and training in their own language.

**4. To assist in SLT assessments (example**: by actively observing children and writing formal notes), group sessions (example: lead, co-lead or make resources) and nursery inputs (example: assist with training nursery staff).
5. To take the lead in planning, organising, delivering and evaluating groups (example: booking venue, reading literature on a specific developmental age) in the community, with a specific focus on promotion and development of children’s language and general communication abilities. Groups could be children’s therapy groups or groups for training parents/carers with or without their children present.
6. To work alongside and under the supervision of SLTs to design and deliver individual and / or group therapy sessions for children (0 to 5 years) who are experiencing difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing. To help parents/carers, who are also present at these sessions, to help learn to create enjoyable and non-stressful experiences around food.
