If you want to progress your career in gardening, we are offering an exciting and varied role in our Thames Valley portfolio gardening team, nurturing three gardens in close proximity - Basildon Park, Grey’s Court and Nuffield Place.

Accommodation is provided to the postholder for the proper or better performance of their duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules

The role is key representative (live-in) and you’ll be provided with a two-bed cottage on site at Grey’s Court near Henley in order to undertake essential out of hours duties - shared on a rotation with other staff.

What it's like to work here:The Thames valley is a beautiful rural area yet not far from major urban hubs such as Reading, Oxford and London. With excellent transport links to the area, we are never short of visitors, so you’ll need to be equally happy interacting with both the public and plants.

As one of six members of our friendly and supportive garden team, you’ll never get bored as you’ll split your time between our three gardens - each with a different character and plant collection. You will have the chance to develop a multitude of skills and literally watch your work bloom.

What you'll be doing:As a hands-on gardener, you’ll have a passion for plants and will enjoy maintaining the gardens to a high standard alongside your fellow team members.

You'll be working hard on a variety of soft and hard landscaping tasks alongside general garden maintenance including mulching, pruning and weeding. You’ll support with the planting and care of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Hedge cutting, garden machinery use and lawn mowing are also part of the job.

As a trusted member of the team, you’ll be able to take responsibility for specific areas of our gardens and influence projects in those areas to ensure maximum enjoyment by our visitors with a variety of seasonal interest in keeping with the spirit and history of the gardens.

We’re lucky to be supported by a team of dedicated garden volunteers at each of our three gardens and you’ll need to be able to lead volunteer activities helping delegate appropriate work.

We open our gardens for people to enjoy and you’ll be expected to interact with the public every day, answering questions, helping out with occasional gardening workshops, tours and helping set up events when needed.

Who we're looking forTo be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the below:

- Trained as a professional gardener/horticulturalist with a good level of practical experience.
- RHS Level 2 or equivalent.
- Have proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants
- Confidence to participate in garden activities and events
- Competence with machinery/equipment use and maintenance; including tractors, chainsaws, and pedestrian mowers with accreditation as required for Health and Safety compliance.
