Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis

There is an exciting opportunity to join the Peritoneal Dialysis department which is part of Renal Services. We currently have around 90 patients on PD who dialyse at home. The roles of the department are varied and include training patients to undertake their own dialysis, caring for any inpatients that are on PD and assisting some of our patients with setting up their dialysis machines at home. Other tasks such as stock management and ordering, maintaining cleanliness within the department and assisting with basic test to assess how well dialysis is working are all included in this role
Any applicant must have a full driving license as they will be visiting patients at home on a regular basis under the guidance of a trained nurse. A Trust vehicle is available for use for these visits.
The employee will support the trained nurses in the department, ensuring adherence to Trust policy at all times.
There is an opportunity to join Renal services and be a member of a small team within a larger group. The post holder under supervision, will support trained staff in providing optimum patient care, ensuring adherence to Trust policy at all times. The employee will be working within Renal services in the Continuous Ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) department. Due to the treatment offered the post holder will be visiting patients in their own homes. The post holder must have a full UK driving license.

1. Responsible for own actions, ensuring all patient interactions/observations are communicated to the appropriate healthcare practitioner.
2. Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks, extending range following training in defined practices. Ensure referral to the appropriate healthcare practitioner where appropriate.
3. Demonstrate technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management e.g. cannulation/ECG where agreed.
4. Organise own daily workload e.g. use and cleaning of identified medical and non-medical
equipment (beds, hoists etc).
5. Assist with personal patient care e.g. bed-bathing and feeding
6. Frequent processing of patient property and valuables, ensuring accurate documentation where appropriate
7. Support less experienced members of staff in their orientation to the ward and role. Provide leadership and support to more junior support workers
8. Utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient data
9. Support the team in expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need
10. Support staff and patients exposed to difficult situations arising in the clinical area e.g. after receipt of bad news or following an unexpected event
11. Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
12. Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
13. Act as a supervisor/mentor for new starters to the department
