An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our established, dynamic, friendly and forward thinking Spinal team in our new Physiotherapy department. This is an excellent learning opportunity for someone wanting to progress into the specialty, with learning opportunities. This is a fixed term contract for one year but with the possibility of permanent positions becoming available in the near future.

This team is led by highly experienced spinal specialists with additional support from Mats Clinical Lead. The clinical lead will support with training and supervision and assist your progress through the APP portfolio route or the HEE APP Msc with dedicated non clinical time within your job plan.

As part of your role you will be encouraged to develop non medical referring role and be given support if required to undertake injection therapy training.

You will ,after a comprehensive induction and training, have an independent specialists Mats clinic and a caseload of complex spinal patients. You would be expected to take a lead in the department spinal rehabilitation which includes the Early back Group.

The department has regular IST and the post holder will be expected to take a lead and provide support and mentoring for junior staff.

You will be expected to work across at least two sites.

1. Develop a clinical and professional role, being guided by the principles and operational policies of the GWH team.
2. On conjunction with the Advanced Practitioner team and team lead ensure that patients are prioritised effectively according to clinical need.
3. To develop a programme of care packages for patients with MSK dysfunction. This also requires the post holder to impart advice which will contribute to the diagnosis and care of patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction.
4. To undertake specialised assessments, and develop skills and knowledge to understand when a patient may require an extended range of diagnostic procedures (imaging and blood tests) and develop investigative and analytical skills to be able to interpret the results
5. To demonstrate highly developed physical skills used in assessment and treatment of patients eg. Palpation, mobilisation, manipulation, and acupuncture, injection therapy techniques.
6. To plan and coordinate a range of complex activities involved with the management of the musculoskeletal patient.This often requires the adjustment of plans and strategies, such as liaising with orthopaedic colleagues, GPs and patients to devise a complex plan of action. To articulate effectively the physiotherapy perspective on a patient’s medical condition with medical colleagues and members of the MDT team and negotiate when various management options are available.

1. To analyse complicated, complex information and indicators such as the assessment of musculoskeletal (MSK) dysfunction.This often requires a comparison of the range of conservative or surgical options.

2. To initiate actions with freedom and autonomy to act, often advising Doctors and Physiotherapists on appropriate courses of action.

3. To undertake development of extended clinical duties, outside of the normal scope of practice of Physiotherapy, including therapeutic injections of joints and autonomous ordering and interpretation
of imaging results.

4. To participate in evidence based projects, research and audit under the guidance of the advanced practitioner team to inform and change practice.

5. To guide the development of colleagues of all grades through teaching, supervision and in-service training. Act as a source of specialist advice on clinical management of complex MSK conditions.

6. To ensure relevant clinical governance issues are identified and addressed.
