Health and Safety Advisor

Job Summary:
SMP Ltd (SMP) is looking for an experienced Health and Safety (H&S) Advisor to be based at the SMP site at Blackpool Road, Newton primarily with the opportunity to cover additional sites if the requirement arises.
SMP wants a positive and healthy safety culture where safety is supported through intrinsic motivation which is led from the top and bottom of the organisation, not safety by diktat.
**Role**:
- Based at Newton and reporting to the Head of H&S, the SMP H&S Advisor shall be responsible for implementing and monitoring site-specific Health and Safety activities at the Newton site.
- The H&S Advisor shall ensure that all requirements of the SMP Health and Safety Management System are met within each area.
- The H&S Advisor shall provide resources and information to SMP employees and management as needed and shall assist in the provision of a comprehensive health and safety service at site level in order to meet company and statutory requirements.
- The H&S Advisor will actively lead in developing and maintaining a strong and positive health and safety culture.
**Requirements**:
- Champion Risk Management throughout the company, so that Health and Safety is not something that is someone else’s responsibility but is collectively owned by all.
- Promote a company culture of Health & Safety compliance where compliance with legislation is assumed to be the bare minimum, excellence and learning being strived for at every level.
- Understand and ensure that the implications and duties imposed by Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, H.S.E. Guidance Notes and Codes of Practice are promulgated, and the company complies, along with communicating updates and implications to the Head of H&S.
- Liaise with the Department Leads over the full range of their duties and responsibilities, with respect to processes, culture, mitigations, and processing advice obtained from both internal and external experienced sources.
- Embrace and ethos of continuous improvement by hunting down specialist information and education obtained from various relevant sources and organisations and ensure adequate distribution and communication to the team.
- Always set a personal example by promoting the safety culture including self-education, continuous improvement, and open training environment.
- Provision of H&S specialist, advice, management, and guidance for SMP sites.
- Monitor H&S legal compliance.
- Management and coordination of relevant risk assessment programmes.
- Carry out risk assessments and communicate the findings, advise relevant local supervisors on eliminating or mitigating hazards.
- Conduct H&S audits/inspections and tours at company facilities.
- Conduct and lead incident investigations.
- Chair H&S committees.
- Assist in the development and improvement in the company H&S system.
- Report H&S performance/metrics to the Head of H&S.
- Roll out company safety initiatives as part of wider H&S team.
- Deliver H&S training for staff.
- Monitor local Workshop manufacturing/assembly activity from an H&S perspective.
- Manage H&S non-conformances and corrective actions.
- Manage local facility compliance.
- Maintain H&S Legal Registers.
- Conduct H&S external Audits.
- Conduct regular Fire Evacuation drills.
- Promote a safe working environment through a personal commitment to working safely.
- Effectively communicate H&S requirements and values to all levels of SMP staff.
- Work with contacts in other departments to develop safety culture.

**Knowledge, Skills and Experience**
- 3 years H&S Advisor experience.
- Understanding of UK H&S Legislation.
- Understanding of diving legislation (desirable)
- Experience of working in marine/ diving or manufacturing.
- NEBOSH General Certificate.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Risk Assessor.
- Lead incident investigator.
- Understanding of ISO 45001.
- Internal audit experience.
- Ability to work effectively within a team structure, accept and understand management instruction manage own timescales and specified timescales effectively.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent PC Skills/ computer literacy.
