Your new role

National Highways is currently recruiting for a Project Sponsor - Future Road Investment Strategy. This role sits within the Future RIS and Government Relations Division which is responsible for ensuring that National Highways meets its obligations for settingthe next Roads Investment Strategy (RIS) - the multi-year investment plan for the Strategic Road Network. As a result, the remit of the team is wide ranging, and its work fast paced as we engage with colleagues across the company, Government and industry todevelop and agree the next investment plan for the Strategic Road Network.

The Sponsor roles are responsible for leading on the development and co-ordination of key activities and projects across the wide range of work streams managed by the Future RIS Division. Success in this role is reliant on successfully working through theoften-ambiguous nature of the RIS setting process and effective delivery through others to identify, develop and agree the inputs required to support delivery of the next RIS.

What you’ll be leading on
- Develop and maintain knowledge and strategic awareness of issues impacting on the RIS setting process by actively maintaining and encouraging regular dialogue with business areas.
- Independent leadership of day to day delivery of activities and preparation of specific products required for the development of the next RIS.
- Develop and implement solutions to emerging risks and issue, utilising and acting on expert and external advice as required to address ambiguity and ensure that Future RIS Division’s objectives in support of setting the next RIS are achieved.
- Consider the needs of internal and external stakeholders in the development of the next RIS, ensuring that Future RIS Division’s activities give due regard to their needs and that plans are in place to ensure effective engagement throughout the process.
- Plan and define project steps, scope project risks and issues, establish plans, review milestones and priorities.
- Develop, update, monitor and report against detailed project plans identifying resource requirements and interdependencies across the programme and wider company.

To be successful
- An understanding of the wider political and stakeholder environment within which National Highways operates.
- Strategic business acumen to ensure programmes are practical and are consistent with the direction set for the company.
- Experience of working in a programme and/or project management environment. and/or sponsorship of a programme.
- Maintain knowledge and strategic awareness of issues impacting on National Highways responsibilities.
- Able to engage effectively with staff at all levels and with different technical understanding and convey complex and challenging information to a variety of audiences.
- Analytical skills, including the ability to independently analyse detailed/complex information and data to assess and improve effectiveness and efficiency of the organisation
