Department Overview The role exists with the Transmission Design team, which is one of the teams with UK Software & Services Core Engineering Design. Within UKS&S we are groups of small teams relying heavily on each other with very little slack or fat in the system. To be as successful as we are, we need to be confident that our own teams and the teams we interact with are all pulling equally and more importantly reliably.
The network is one of the worlds largest emergency services networks and we have been at the cutting edge of the development of this technology. Innovative solutions have had to be found for complex and unique problems whilst the network has been rolledout, grown and enhanced, at the same time as maintaining customer service on a live operational system. Solutions have to be found to inlife problems and network growthenhancement, always within demanding timescales due to the nature of our customers operations.
**Job Description**:
Please note This role is a Hybrid working role. Work split between home working and office working.
The initial purpose of this role is to support a nationwide Access and Core network migration from conventional TDM network operation to IP network and in some cases IP emulated TDM operation. The network migration will be conducted on a regional basis, with regions being migrated sequentially.
Providing a source of expertise within Motorola for all technical and engineering matters relating to the new Access MW architecture
The individual will be responsible for overseeing all microwave aspects of assigned microwave projects from award until system acceptance, ensuring Motorola and industry best practices are followed for
Detailed design approvals and implementation.
MW Link planning.
MW Link Testing.
Design governance and coordination with suppliers, vendors and internal customers.
Ofcom licensing.
Customer Presentations.
System Staging.
System Installations.
System Acceptance Testing.
System Documentation.
The supervision of commissioning and acceptance testing of the network solution to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
No direct line responsibility for staff, however this role has to lead teams of staff to ensure successful commissioning and testing of migrated circuits.
Peers with PM staff, with the Managers of the staff who are carrying out the commissioning and testing work as well as with external supplierscontractors.
The use of problem solving abilities to overcome technical problems and the use of innovative and creative thinking to generate and implement solutions for improving the reliability and resilience of the new core transmission network.
Basic Requirements
**Requirements**:
Degree, HND, HNC or other similar quality formal education.
Experience in a transmission related telecommunications field. Must have specific experience on Access MW networks.
Proven experience as a design authority in network and link design, planning and testing activities
Advanced knowledge of Ofcom Licensing.
Expert level experience of link planning and design using Atoll and other MW planning tools
Experience on Aviat NEC SIAE MW radios
Thorough understanding of Ofcom regulations on spectrum allocation and MW
Advanced knowledge of SDH and microwave systems preferably with a Service provider, MNO or a leading vendor.
Detailed understanding of MW link availability, link performance and latency impact and how to improve all of these in various network topologies.
Understanding of layer 2 and layer 3 routing protocols, QOS, Aggregation, packet based networks, multiplexing, fibre connectivity and other related transmission techniques
Understanding of network and element management systems and North bound interfaces.
Strong knowledge of communications infrastructure and wiring practices.
In depth knowledge of mobile network design.
In depth knowledge and experience of fault investigation and rectification gained in an operational environment.
