**Job summary**:

- The Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL) provides the national diagnostic service for the detection of arboviruses, rickettsiae, leptospirosis, viral haemorrhagic fevers and a range of ACDP hazard group 3 bacteria including
- _Bacillus anthracis_ and
- _Francisella tularensis_. The Lyme disease specialist unit diagnostic service was transferred into RIPL in 2012. RIPL is part of the National Infection Service of the UK Health Security Agency and works closely with other departments covering a wide range of infectious disease services and associated epidemiology services. RIPL is also home to the national Imported Fever Service, a partnership between RIPL clinicians and clinicians from the Tropical Infectious Diseases units of the Royal Liverpool and University College Hospitals. RIPL is a category 1 response laboratory for high consequence infectious diseases and biothreat agents, and forms part of the UK’s national resilience provisions. RIPL also works closely with DEFRA teams on certain zoonotic diseases.**Job description**:
**Person specification**:

- The Consultant in Infection will provide expert consultant support for RIPL and the Imported Fever Service and take the lead for the Lyme Disease service in the department. RIPL operates an acute specialist service with 24hour availability for high consequence pathogens including viral haemorrhagic fevers, the arbovirus group, hantaviruses, Borrelia, rickettsia and Coxiella, anthrax, tularaemia and other biothreat agents. The work covers a wide range of imported bacterial and viral agents and zoonoses and vector borne diseases in the UK, and the consultant will be a key part of the team offering advice on diagnosis, management, and infection control for these agents. As an expert in control of infection and antimicrobial resistance the consultant will bring this expertise to RIPL and UKHSA as required. The post holder will work with key patient groups for Lyme disease to improve the service in the interests of patients and will lead an educational programme for healthcare professionals on Lyme and related infections.**Benefits**:
