The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a unique attraction in south east London where world cultures and the natural world are brought together for everyone to enjoy. The Museum holds internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as a popular natural history gallery and Aquarium. The 16 acres of beautiful Gardens feature a tropical Butterfly House and offer stunning views across London.

We’re looking for a new School Bookings and Visits Trainee to join our Formal Learning Team. This is a brilliant opportunity to discover how museum learning programmes work, to understand the needs of schools, teachers, and pupils, and to gain loads of new skills.

You will work closely with our brilliant Learning Team to provide a friendly bookings service and warm welcome for school groups, and to create marketing materials about our programme.

We’re looking for someone who is eager to learn, and passionate about ensuring all young people have access to exciting, enriching experiences. You should be organised, have good attention to detail, and enjoy being in a fast-paced environment.

**Main Purpose of role**

This traineeship is a brilliant opportunity to learn how museum learning programmes work, and to understand the needs of schools, teachers, and their pupils.

Our museum welcomes around 40,000 school visitors each year for workshops and self-guided visits. You will be an important part of our busy team, helping to ensure the best experience possible for children and young people.

Your traineeship will focus on two areas: providing a friendly, helpful bookings service for teachers, and supporting with the operation of school visits.

You will also help welcome school visitors to the Museum. Working closely with colleagues, you will learn how to prepare teaching spaces, and to safely pack and move Handling Collection objects and furniture. You will also learn how to greet classes of school children at our busiest times, sharing important information about the day ahead.

Lastly, you will help to market our programme to schools, creating half-termly e-newsletters with colleagues and ensuring that our schools webpages are regularly updated.

**Training and Development**

Alongside your on-the-job development, you will be paired with a mentor who will support you through your traineeship, in addition to ongoing support from your line manager and the wider team. There will also be opportunities learn from colleagues working in roles across the Horniman, and in other museums.

**Team description**

Alongside Formal Learning, the Horniman’s Content Team includes curators of our collections (World Cultures, Musical Instruments, and Natural History), along with teams that work with community groups and volunteers. We work to share the stories of our collections with our visitors.

**MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**School and learning group bookings (70%)**

This work will be mainly desk-based
- Use our booking system (CRM), to process bookings accurately.
- Share information about weekly school visits with teams across the museum.
- Track important information about schools, to ensure that children of all backgrounds are being welcomed to the museum.
- Treat teacher and school data with care
- Liaise with the Finance Team to identify and follow-up on unpaid invoices

**School visit operations (20%)**

This work will be visitor-facing, in the museum
- Help to set up and pack away learning spaces, ready for school workshops (including manual handling)
- Welcome school groups to the museum, help them to access our lunchrooms and facilities, and ensure teachers have the information they need for the day
- Support the wider team with the maintenance of the Handling Collection

**Communications (10%)**

This work will be desk-based
- With the wider team, create half-termly e-newsletters for schools and home educating families
- Work with the Horniman’s Digital Team to update the school webpages.
- Identify schools for targeted programme
