**About the Materials Processing Institute**
The Materials Processing Institute is the UK’s national innovation centre for metals and is a globally recognised centre for the innovation, development, and commercialisation of technology for advanced materials, industrial decarbonisation, digital technologies, and the circular economy. These innovations are delivered by scientists, engineers, and project teams with expertise in materials science and advanced processing, utilising state-of-the-art equipment, laboratories, workshops, demonstration, scale-up and production facilities to develop technology, enhance materials and improve processes. **Purpose of the role**:
**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
- Provide relevant knowledge and expertise in metallurgical processes.
- Conduct forensic metallurgical examinations.
- Complete materials characterisation techniques on a range of materials.
- Analyse and interpret analytical data, identify trends, and prepare reports summarising findings to support process optimisation and decision-making.
- Plan the use of research resources, laboratories, and workshops as appropriate.
- Operate and maintain a range of instruments, cut-off machines, polishing equipment, optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes
- Plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and maintain effective working relationships with other departments.
- Have a constant awareness of IP potential to reflect the Institute's core business objectives.
- Commitment to health and safety, and personal development in themselves.
As a member of the Characterisation and Analysis Group, you will deliver the research work in innovative projects that are focussed on the future of industry. You may also be involved in other research projects for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass, cement, and chemicals.
**Person Specification -**
**Experience, Skills, Qualifications**
**Essential**
- A track record of academic and/or industry research and continuous professional development
- Experience of working in a metallurgical laboratory environment
- Ability to use a range of equipment aligned to material characterisation; some of them are (but not limited to) OLM, SEM/EDS, OES, XRD, XRF.
- An understanding of the mechanical testing of metals including tensile, fatigue, hardness, charpy impact.
- Sample preparation of materials for materials characterisation, including polishing, linishing and mounting and metallurgical techniques such as sulphur printing
- Experience in use and production of health and safety instructions, risk assessments and COSHH forms
- Produce reports on research and tests carried out.
- Ability for analysing and processing large data.
- Collaboration and communication with industrial partners, and other research Institutes.
- Able to manage their own workload, stick to deadlines, and the ability to constantly update knowledge.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
**Desirable**
- Minimum of a degree in a Materials Science
- Experienced in low activation steel and analysis
- Practical experience of material processing and manufacturing.
- Extensive experience with a demonstrable record of achievements within the field (Qualified by Experience).
- Rare Earth Elements experience
- Critical mineral knowledge
- Proven ability to disseminate research through a range of mediums.
- A grasp of project management processes and techniques.
- Member of a professional organisation, i.e., IOM3, IChemE.
