**Horse Care Hospital Yard Team Member**

Permanent full time
40 hours per week as per rota (to include weekends)
7.30am to 4.00pm
(Support with the late evening site checks will be arranged as additional hours and on a shared rota basis).
We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with experience in horse care to join the Hospital Yard team at our veterinary unit in Hapton South of Norwich.

**A full clean manual driving licence is essential**

**Job Purpose**
- To work under the specific supervision of the Hapton Yard Co-ordinators (HYC), providing a high standard of care to the equines under veterinary care in the veterinary hospital.
**Principal Duties and Responsibilities**
To work under the direction of the HYC on a daily basis to:
- Provide high quality care to hospital inpatients in stables, on woodchips and vet care paddocks.
- Ensure that stabled hospital inpatients and their environments are checked daily, reporting any concerns to the HYC.
- Ensure that all veterinary inpatients have access to suitable water, feed/forage and shelter and that appropriate hygiene levels are maintained.
- Ensure hospital inpatients have a good level of stable management, including grooming, picking out feet and bathing.
- Ensure that the yard, surrounding areas and facilities are clean, tidy and well maintained.
- Muck out stables thoroughly, clean and refill water receptacles and clean feed bowls daily.
- Ensure that vet care paddocks, shelters and woodchips are muck picked to a high standard daily.
- Make up hay nets for all hospital inpatients accurately and weigh, label and distribute daily.
- Weigh all inpatients on admission to the hospital, record weights and ensure that stringent feeding protocols are followed. Ensure inpatients are eating appropriately whilst under vet care, reporting any concerns to the HYC.
- Administer medication to hospital inpatients where directed. Supervise acceptance of medication by inpatients and report any concerns to HYC.
- Assist with daily turn outs.
- Assist with pressure washing and deep cleaning of stables.
- Handle hospital inpatients for the farrier.
- Maintain appropriate standards whilst tending to quarantine equines, adhering to the appropriate SOP.
- Use of ATVs as appropriate during daily routine.
- Liaise and communicate regularly and effectively with, and under the direction of the HYC.
- Understand the importance of effective communication, observation and unified team work.
**Expectations**
- To participate in departmental and “in house” training and carry learned skills into practice.
- To ensure, as far as reasonably practical, observance and adherence to the health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
- To ensure that services and conduct are in accordance with sanctuary standards, equal opportunities and objectives of Quality Assurance.
- To perform other such duties, of a like nature, as may from time to time be required by the sanctuary.
- Caring for large animals is a very physical activity and the role involves bending, lifting and other labour intensive tasks. The person carrying out this role must therefore be physically fit to carry out many of the tasks.
**GENERAL**
- Ensure that all within the teams have a grasp of the Sanctuary’s structure, values and purpose and have opportunities for involvement in its further development.
- Ensure the maintenance of confidentiality in respect of staff, volunteer and client records and all privileged information relating to the services of the Charity, its Equines, staff and supporters and particularly of the area for which directly involved.
- Promote and foster the Sanctuary’s reputation and standing within the community and nationally; with private, statutory and voluntary sector agencies and organisations.
- Undertake any other duties which may be reasonably required.
