The role of the Reducing Restrictive Practice Peer Tutor has been developed specifically for people who have lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges, experience of personally accessing inpatient mental health services and of receiving restrictive interventions during admission.

As an integral and highly valued member of the Reducing Restrictive Practice Team, the Reducing Restrictive Practice Peer Tutor will assist in the co-delivery of comprehensive Trust-wide training on the prevention and therapeutic management of violence and aggression (TMVA), for all levels of staff.

The post holder will work with the team to ensure training materials are reviewed and developed to uphold and promote a recovery focused approach, and will draw upon their own lived experience when co-producing and delivering training.

The post holder will support in ensuring that the principles of recovery are upheld within the team as well as across CNWL inpatient services as part of their Link Peer Tutor work.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Reducing Restrictive Practice Peer Tutor to join our friendly and dynamic CNWL Reducing Restrictive Practice Team, drawing on their own personal lived experience in order to support in the co-production and co-delivery of the Trust-wide training for the Therapeutic Management of Violence and Aggression (TMVA).

1. To co-deliver Trust Wide TMVA training across Trust sites, including facilitating simulation-based training. The physical aspect of the training involves teaching, assessing and actively participating in highly specialised bespoke techniques to ensure safety of all persons involved.
2. To utilise own personal lived experience as a person in recovery in order to support staff to gain better understanding of the experience of using inpatient services and help staff to consider the impact of restrictive interventions.
3. To work as a pro-active Link Peer Tutor for specified clinical areas and teams, by providing recovery-focused advice and guidance, ensuring training, de-escalation techniques and staff/patient debriefs are kept high on their agenda.
4. To promote the principles of recovery within the Reducing Restrictive Practice Team, the Trust TMVA training and across CNWL inpatient services
5. To promote the awareness of recovery focused practice by modelling a positive strengths-based approach, and the use of non-discriminatory language in training and in relationships with clinical teams.
6. To promote positive understanding, awareness and attitudes towards mental and physical health as part of day-to-day duties.
7. To regularly review Datix entries and clinical records systems (SystmOne), and following up on these with specific services.
8. To ensure a psychologically safe environment for the staff attending training, providing emotional support to staff who may express/exhibit emotional or psychological distress pre and post training as well during training.
9. Assist in signposting individual who may require immediate support outside of the training environment.
10. Consult and inform the Reducing Restrictive Practice Manager of any issues that may affect the efficient delivery of the training.
11. To identify and address additional learning support needs that learners may have to enable them to access and complete courses.
12. To ensure the content of courses reflect innovative and current practice, compromise a range of perspectives and is informative and culturally sensitive.
13. To respect integrity, confidentiality, clinical governance and data protection requirements in line with Trust policy.
14. To work collaboratively with colleagues across the Trust, contributing proactively to the Trust-wide Reducing Restrictive Practice Group.
15. To support in the development and evaluation of the TMVA training programmes and contribute to on-going design of further programmes.
