The role can be based from either York or Swindon, inclusive with hybrid working. Flexible options are open to discussion.

This role provides senior capability in the Aerial Survey team by contributing to our programme of archaeological work for Historic England Regions, English Heritage Trust, Local Authorities, academic and other sector partners. This involves developing the Aerial Survey team’s innovative research, and coordinating with the wider Archaeological Investigation team, to attract partnerships and grant-aid to grow and develop our current capabilities and services.

The postholder will deliver a high level of practical expertise by managing and participating in the investigation and assessment of the historic environment, particularly through archaeological aerial investigation and mapping.

The postholder will provide expert support to the wider Aerial Survey team, helping to develop their work and projects. In your collaboration role, you will nurture Historic England’s relationship with a range of sector organisations involved in aerial survey and landscape archaeology. This will ensure enhanced opportunities for collaborating on research, training and implementation of innovative methods and technologies in aerial survey and mapping across the commercial, local government, academic and community sectors

National salary range:
£36,603 - £40,000 pro-rata

What you will be doing
- **Investigation and research**. Gather, analyse and interpret aerial survey data and research material. This will be disseminated and promoted through academic and other publications, conferences, seminars, lectures and dissemination via the web, the Research Report series and HE Research to inform the protection and management of the historic environment, in support of internal and external clients, including Regions and English Heritage Trust, and to agreed quality standards.
- **Strategic engagement**: To ensure our aerial survey work benefits from collaborative approaches with other sector stakeholders and national and international partners, both public and private sector. This should include sector specialist bodies, home nation Agencies, universities and other interested stakeholders who are deploying aerial survey techniques in landscape archaeology.
- **Intelligent client**. Contribute as requested in a timely and constructive manner as intelligent client to quality assurance and delivery of all external HE grants, commissions and tenders related to assessing the character and significance of the historic environment.
- **Capacity building**. To contribute to the development of Historic England’s capacity building, training and guidance and publication programmes. - Strong influencing, collaboration and negotiating skills, including an ability to mediate complex issues.
- Knowledge of the research funding landscape and building partnerships with academia, other Independent Research Organisations and the wider sector.
- Experience of project management and delivery to time, cost and quality constraints.
