As a duty-holder under the Nuclear Industries Security Regulations, responsible for the security of nuclear and radiological materials and facilities and providing support to the wider nuclear sector:

- We/you will provide delivery and technical leadership of security and threat reduction projects in the Safety, Security and Safeguards team to time, cost and quality.
- Our work includes a diverse range of activity covering all aspects of security assessment and management for operational facilities during routine operations, and specifying future requirements during facility modification and design projects, including to next generation reactors.

As the UK National Nuclear Laboratory we have committed internal investment to an ambitious Security & Non-Proliferation (S&NP) Focus Area within which there will be opportunities to support the laboratory in thought-leadership, innovation, and external engagement with domestic and international partners. Security work areas include (but are not limited to):

- threat assessment.
- vital area identification.
- security vulnerability assessment.
- physical, technical and operational security.
- integrated security and defence in depth, addressing regulatory policy and guidance to operational facilities.
- security risk assessment.

The team is dedicated, hard-working and passionate about the work they do. The location for the role is flexible although some travel will be necessary to support business needs.

Main Responsibilities
Main Responsibilities for Security Consultant:

- Technical delivery of projects in the Safeguards and Security areas to time, cost, quality, value and service requirements. Customers may include any UK civil or defence nuclear facility or operator.
- Interfacing with internal and external stakeholders as necessary (e.g., BEIS, IAEA) to effect successful delivery of projects.
- Development and management of customer, regulator and stakeholder relationships including identification and development of new opportunities for the team.
- Contributing to the development of new security capabilities through sharing previous experience, aiding the development of innovative approaches and providing insight.
- Maintaining technical awareness of both NNL and external capability within the area.
- Working as part of multi-disciplinary teams addressing security challenges and delivering solutions. You may need to convey security threats, rationale for security decisions, etc. to non-security professionals and decision makers, whilst maintaining cognisance of information security.
- Developing and maintaining individual competency.
- Seeking appropriate membership of suitable professional bodies, promote professional standards, and undertake Continuing Professional Development.
- Seek opportunities for membership of relevant committees and advisory boards to represent NNL.

Essential Criteria for Security Consultant:

- Degree in relevant science or engineering discipline (or have equivalent practical security experience).
- Strong knowledge and experience with proven track record in a security-related field.
- Ability to evaluate and translate requests for support into effective task delivery.
- Proven ability to both act independently under own initiative and to work in a team.
- Good networking skills.
- Strong communication skills, including multi-site working.
- Willingness and ability to undertake and secure an enhanced security clearance.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years’ worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Security Consultant:

- Membership of a professional institution or working towards this qualification.
- Experience of working with Government.
- Mentoring skills to mentor and develop junior staff.
