Cardiac Physiologist

**Job Purpose**-The post holder will act as a source of advice and expertise regarding cardiac diagnostic imaging for research studies. They will be responsible for the planning, coordination and conduct of clinical trials along with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work to high standards across a variety of tasks with vigilant regard to all requirements. These include ensuring the study is run effectively according to scientific, clinical, ethical, financial and legal requirements and targets.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. The post holder has a senior role in the provision of a highly skilled, professional and efficient cardiac diagnostic services on behalf of the Heart Failure Clinical Research Team to patients recruited for all Heart Failure Clinical Trials when required.
2. The post holder will be responsible for the planning and management of cardiac diagnostic services of according to the clinical trial Protocols. They will regularly have to prioritise and organise their workload to ensure continuity of service and patient care.
3. The post holder will be required to adapt new standards and/or guidelines to provide new procedure and policy and any new changes and advances in cardiac procedures/investigations. Participate and provide information/results in clinical trials either in a primary role or assist with clinical trials performed by multiple Heart Failure Clinical Trial teams.
4. Develop and improve the capabilities of the research team through being responsible for training and education associated with the study protocol, the development of strategies to meet individual study demands and for the safe and accurate implementation of the study by self and others
5. The post holder reports echocardiograms as an independent practitioner and makes the decision to inform the Cardiologist or Study leads of an unexpected finding or unusual appearance.
6. The post holder is responsible for reporting echocardiograms, which have been performed at an earlier time by other Senior Physiologists who do not yet have a level of competence for reporting. This can be extremely stressful as a clinical report or clinical decisions have to be made based on this limited data.
7. Practice at all times within the Code of Professional Conduct to ensure that the needs of each research project are met.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**
A1 BSE/equivalent Accreditation for Transthoracic Echocardiography A2 The post holder will be required to have a detailed in-depth knowledge of cardiac ultrasound imaging machines equipment functions.
A3 Academic and scientific knowledge acquired through formal training to Clinical Physiology Degree including professional body examinations leading to registration with the RCCP.
A4 Member of Society or Cardiac Science and Technology (SCST)
A5 ASCST accreditation
A6 Clinical Physiology Degree or equivalent (HBTEC/HNC & Specialist Courses)
A7 BSc Degree in Cardiology or associated degree

**Desirable**
B1 Evidence of management, education and training.
B2 3 years experience as a Senior Physiologist with specialist knowledge of Echo/Device services
B3 Technical and theoretical knowledge acquired through departmental training programmes and through study for professional examinations.
B4 Post holder has underpinning knowledge of general anatomy and physiology and specialist knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physics, chemistry biology and pharmacology.
B5 Specialist technical and scientific knowledge in ECG, Exercise Testing, Isotope Exercise testing, 24hr monitoring for BP and ECG, Tilt testing, Cardiac Ultrasound and pacemaker/ICD follow up.
B6 Knowledge of Ultrasound Digital Archiving - storing images and management of reports
B7 Knowledge of PC work programmes
B8 Knowledge and operation of Resuscitation equipment
B9 Excellent knowledge of ICH GCP Guidelines. Medicines for Human Use Legislation (2004) & Research Governance Framework.

**Skills**

**Essential**
C1 Working skills to calibrate, clean, maintain and troubleshoot technical problems regarding to cardiac machines to ensure safe, accurate, high-quality data/reports are produced, stored and maintained for the HF Clinical Trials Group.
C2 Working with computerised ECG machines that are linked to a patient by specific electrode placement on the chest. These machines are maintained by Clinical Physics but all Clinical Physiologists should check for lead cracks and maintain supply of electrodes, paper and tissue on machines.
C5 Demonstrable excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work using own initiative. C6 Evidence of highly developed clinical and technical skills including Safe handling, preparation, storage and shipping of biological samples
