Applications are invited for the posts of Shoulder Research Fellow in the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit for February 2024 to February 2025 and onwards
The post will be based predominantly at Broadgreen Hospital, our state of the art elective centre and at the Aintree University, our trauma site.
You will acquire experience in all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery including both arthroscopic surgery and joint arthroplasty. In addition, you will take an active part in the management of upper limb trauma. You will be required to carry out weekend daytime on-call duties.
It is expected that the appointee will have completed their training in Orthopaedic surgery and that at the completion of this post they will take up a Consultant level post with a specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

The Fellowship is for a period of one year and will be under the supervision of Mr P Brownson & Mr M Smith. During the appointment it is expected that the trainee will also be working with other Consultants in the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit. The Fellow will gain clinical experience in a wide variety of elective and trauma shoulder and elbow surgery including arthroscopic surgery, arthroplasty and a wide variety of complex open surgery to the level of a tertiary referral unit.

It is expected that the appointee will take an active role in research within the Upper Limb Unit. The fellow will acquire clinical and operative experience in all aspects of upper limb trauma.

It is expected that at the completion of the appointment, the Fellow will assume a Consultant level post with a specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

The job will involve providing a supervisory role to junior doctors including Senior House Officers and Specialist Orthopaedic Registrars.

The Liverpool Orthopaedic Trauma Service (LOTS) has over 40 Consultant Surgeons covering a diverse range of Trauma & Orthopaedics, making it one of the largest UK centres. It is a tertiary referral centre for all sub
- specialities including limb reconstruction, spinal services, complex arthroplasty including metastatic tumour work, pelvis and acetabulum, sarcoma and complex upper limb surgery. It is a level one trauma centre for Cheshire and Merseyside. All the surgeons are passionate about what they do and keen to develop you and your knowledge.

The post will be based predominantly at Broadgreen Hospital, our state of the art elective centre and at the Aintree University, our trauma site. Day to day work will be varied including ward work, outpatient clinics and theatre sessions. We encourage trainees to operate under supportive supervision to develop their surgical skills. A number of the consultants are deeply involved in educational roles all the way from undergraduate level to registrar level and pride themselves on training the next generation of surgeons.

The Fellow should have completed or be near completion of his orthopaedic training. The Fellow must be eligible for registration with the General Medical Council. Certification of Completion of Training in Orthopaedics, as recognised by the General Medical Council, is optional.
