An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join the stroke therapy service in Bolton. The stroke service comprises both in-patient and community settings with the post initially starting in the community

The In-patient part of the team are based on the Stroke Unit at Royal Bolton Hospital and work as a closely integrated MDT with the nursing and wider MDT team. The community aspect sits within the Community Stroke Team which is based at Breightmet Health Centre. The team sees both new and existing stroke patients providing specialist assessment, treatment and advice.

As a member of the wider MDT you will work alongside and support specialist therapy staff in providing specialist treatment, intervention and advice guided by a qualified therapist. The post offers the opportunity to develop skills within Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech and Language Therapy within a supportive environment alongside other existing therapy assistants

**To assist therapist(s) in their role by**:
Providing a routine therapy under the direction of a named therapist to ensure the delivery of high quality services

Preparing therapeutic materials as required

Undertaking administrative tasks related to the work load

The post holder will be accountable for their actions, within an agreed level of autonomy, following a programme of development through required competencies.

Clinical

To carry out specific care and treatment under the guidance and delegation of the qualified staff in accordance with the therapy plan on Stroke Unit or in the community.

To be able to recognise improvements or adverse developments in the client’s condition, report to supervisor and document it.

To implement intervention programmes either in groups, or on an individual basis, under the supervision of a registered therapist

To organise and carry out follow - up visits in the client’s home, either in relation to assessment and provision of equipment or to carry out other therapeutic activity under the guidance of the registered therapy staff.

To prepare the client and environment for therapeutic intervention when required

To maintain hygiene and cleanliness of all relevant clinical areas

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools, to effectively communicate with and gather information from clients/carers and feedback accurately to therapy colleagues, in order to progress any treatment programmes. This will include clients who may have difficulties understanding or communicating, e.g. speech difficulties.

To identify when intervention with a client is appropriate and to be able to modify intervention within agreed level of competence.

To physically move and handle clients/equipment within health & safety guidelines in a variety of settings maximising the client’s comfort and minimise adverse effects of pressure

To be aware of the local and out of area procedures for the provision of resources as required and complete referrals in liaison with relevant therapist.

To liaise directly with voluntary and other support agencies in order to gain information on available community services appropriate to clients

To demonstrate understanding of the roles of other MDT members and work in partnership with them in order to contribute to MDT assessment of clients.

To maintain effective communication with carers in line with client confidentiality

The post may involve working as part of the Neurology service to support the therapy team

**Professional Duties**:
To work within own limits of competence, levels of responsibility and accountability within the team and organisation.

To manage time effectively in order to fulfil needs of own workload as well as team priorities.

To identify area of risk and follow Trust and departmental Risk Management procedures.

To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with guidelines and Trust standards, as laid down in the Record Keeping Policy.

To identify level of compliance and ability of patient to consent to intervention within organisational guidelines.

To contribute to the Division’s and team’s Clinical Governance arrangements and quality agenda.

To monitor, maintain, store and dispose of equipment in accordance with health and safety procedures

To carry out the routine Health and Safety checks of the dept - eg weekly checking of alarm systems, fire extinguishers etc.

To report any accidents, complaints, defects in equipment, near misses and untoward incidents following Trust procedure
