An opportunity has arisen for a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry to join the Community Dental team at Whittington Health in north west London cover ing the boroughs of Hillingdon, Hounslow and Ealing.

The post-holder will be responsible for specialist treatment (including conscious sedation) of paediatric patients with complex needs who are referred to the service; the appointee will provide clinical leadership for the development of paediatric dentistry in the service.

The majority of the post will involve providing clinical care, including the assessment and treatment of children under general anaesthesia and treatment of SEN children, but there will also be responsibilities in the areas of clinical governance, training, management and supervision.

MAIN DUTIES

CLINICAL
1. To provide Specialist Paediatric clinical care to Children with additional or special care needs. The following main care groups are included under this description:

- Oral Health care of anxious children
- Children with challenging behavioral disorders
- Children with autistic spectrum disorders
- Children with attention Deficit Disorders
- Children with Special Needs including
- Cerebral Palsy
- Severe learning difficulties
- Complicated Medical Histories
- Neurological difficulties
- Specialised Management of children with oral and dental developmental problems including
- Dental anomalies; eg amelogenesis imperfecta, hypodontia, MIH, osteogenesis imperfecta
- Cleft lip and Palate
- Management of damage to teeth and mouth following traumatic injury

Patients may be referred by community dental officers, general dental practitioners and hospital consultants, in addition to those referred from staff in the health, local authority and voluntary sectors.
1. To provide a comprehensive dental treatment service for patients who require special care, including the development of integrated care pathways across primary, secondary and social care
2. To manage the delivery of specialist Paediatric dentistry within dental surgeries and in other sites, and to ensure that treatment is provided safely, effectively and efficiently. This will include ensuring that the appropriate monitoring and resuscitation equipment is available.
3. To provide clinical care under sedation, or general anaesthesia in conjunction with the Hospital Dental Service (HDS).
4. e) To demonstrate professional and clinical leadership in the clinical setting in providing treatment safely and to a high standard,
5. To provide clinical care for other CDS patients, according to the needs of the service
6. To comply with all relevant professional and organisational policies, guidelines and standards including mandatory training, health and safety and infection control
7. To provide clinical cover, including treatment planning sessions when required, in health centres other than their base clinic, and in other settings such as special schools and and hospitals

LEADERSHIP and MANAGEMENT

To provide clinical supervision of junior staff, including trainees in paediatric dentistry as a shared responsibility with other colleagues
1. To carry out appraisals of the work of junior colleagues and implement appropriate training programmes
2. To demonstrate leadership in the development of paediatric dentistry, offering professional leadership, promoting children’s oral health and enabling the development of clinical care networks in partnership with others for the effective and efficient provision of care for children
3. To make presentations to staff, stakeholders and commissioners where appropriate
4. To take on management roles as part of the senior leadership team in Dental Services
5. Work with health care managers to develop and deliver efficient cost effective strategies for the improvement of the oral health in the child population.
