Job title: Early Years SENCO

Responsible to: Pre-school Manager/Management Committee

Responsible for: Children

Purpose of the job: Responsible for the day-to-day management of the Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision in the setting

**Main duties**

1. Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the SEN policy.

2. Co-ordinating provision in the setting for children with SEN.

3. Contributing towards implementing duties relating to relevant legislation.

4. Monitoring the observation, identification, assessment and support of children with SEN.

5. Collating information on individual children and writing SEN plans in accordance with a child’s next steps, encouraging achievable development.

6. Ensuring all records on children with SEN are maintained and relevant information is passed to Reception Class teachers and school SENCOs at transition.

7. Ensuring transition is appropriate and meaningful for each child moving onto primary school.

8. Offering confidential support and advice to parents. This may include daily informal contact and regular reviews of their child’s progress.

9. Advising and supporting staff on issues relating to inclusive practice. This may include contributing towards relevant in-house training.

10. Seeking support and advice from the setting’s senior management team to ensure effective delivery of the setting’s SEN provision.

Liaising with other relevant agencies on the delivery of provision and the individual needs of children with SEN

**NB. This is not an exhaustive list of duties and the post holder will be required to undertake any other reasonable duties as discussed with and as directed by the line manager.**

**Person specification**
- Essential criteria_

1. A recognised Level 3 childcare and education qualification.

2. Proven experience of working within a childcare setting and some experience of working with children with SEN.

3. Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation such as the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (SENCOP) and the Equality Act.

4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to build relationships.

5. Knowledge of how to provide inclusive practice for all children, following the Early Years curriculum.

6. Commitment to promoting an ethos of effective inclusion to all users, visitors, staff and the local community.

7. Excellent observation, identification, assessment and record keeping skills.

8. The ability to work as part of the senior management team on the delivery of the SEN provision.

9. The ability to manage time and workload effectively.

10. Willingness to undertake further training related to the role.
- Desirable criteria_

1. Knowledge and experience of working with external agencies.

2. Awareness of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities through relevant training and/or personal experience.

3. Knowledge of an alternative communication system such as Makaton or Core Boards.

4. Previous experience of training staff.

5. Knowledge of the Westmorland and Furness SEND processes and experiences of following these.

An enhanced Disclosure Barring Service check is required for this role. Applicants must be prepared to disclose any convictions they may have and any orders which have been made against them.
