**INCLUDES PROSPECTIVE COVER**: YES ANNUAL AND STUDY LEAVE ARRANGEMENTS: Annual and study leave is allocated and included in the rota.
**DUTIES**: Registrar will rotate through 2 sub-specialty firms and participate in theatres, clinics, ward rounds and ward cover.
**Principal Responsibilities**: The care of patients on the wards, in the theatres and at out-patient clinics as appropriate to the grade of the post and under the direction of the consultants responsible, involving: Operating sessions Attendance at ward rounds and routine ward work Outpatient clinics This whole-time post is based at the West Wing, John Radcliffe Hospital with occasional visits to peripheral outpatient clinics in the region. Specialist Trainees will be expected to contribute to the assessment of junior colleagues. Specialist Trainees will be familiar with the assessment process used in the ISCP. Specific training will be made available from the Postgraduate Centre. b) Daily Commitment: As above c) Description of Working Pattern 6 Specialist Trainees and 6 Fellows work a FULL shift rota.

**SPECIALTY**: Description of Specialty Services Provided The Hospital The post is based in Oxford but may involve a rotation to another unit in the future. The West Wing opened in January 2007. The hospital provides a number of acute, rehabilitation and specialist clinical services, including regional specialities. These include ophthalmology, ENT, plastic and reconstructive surgery and neurosciences (neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuroradiology), The Oxford Centre of Enablement, which is located on the Nuffield Orthopaedic site, provides services for patients suffering from stroke and head injuries. The hospital has some 290 beds and employs approximately 1,300 staff. The Department Initiated by Sir Hugh Cairns, the Oxford Regional Neurosurgery Unit has developed to offer a fully comprehensive service. Modern theatres, ITU facilities and paediatric beds enable the department to look after both paediatric and adult patient with all types of neurosurgical problems. In addition to intracranial, vascular and tumour surgery, there is expertise in the fields of functional surgery, epilepsy, pituitary surgery and craniofacial surgery. There is a great interest in all types of spinal disorders, including those of rheumatiod disease of the neck, and spinal tumours.
With a total of approx. 100 endoscopic cases performed yearly there are excellent opportunities for operative training and most fellows have performed 40+ cases in the subspecialty (supervised) by the end of the fellowship. In addition to this there is a weekly joint clinic with the endocrine team, a weekly meeting to discuss new referrals and a monthly Pituitary MDT. The fellow is encouraged to see new patients in the general neurosurgery clinic.
The fellow is on the general on-call rotation at Registrar grade (12 registrar grade Drs in Unit) and is expected to cross cover operating lists and clinic when colleagues are absent.
Research is actively encouraged and most fellows have presented work relating to the fellowship at the SBNS, BSBS, ESBS, CNS or yearly RCP meeting. Many have published book chapters, editorials and papers as joint authors. The expectation is that the fellow will have a presentation and publication as a minimum following the fellowship.
