Do you have a passion for animals, enjoy working mainly outdoors, in a job that is varied and promotes responsible dog ownership. If so, then this may be the unique opportunity for you.

We are looking for an individual who has the technical skills to carry out the duties of our Public Protection Animal Warden. The post is career graded 6 - 7 and we are looking to appoint at grade 6 initially although career progression will be available, and we would recruit at grade 7 if all the qualification criteria and experience was met in full.

You should have good communication skills to deal with people directly and at all levels, and to provide dog-related services in a range of different environments. As this post involves working outdoors and on your own most of the time, you must be self-motivated, reliable with the ability to work with mínimal supervision and as part of a team towards shared goals. Working with external partners including local vets, the Police and passing welfare issues on to the RSPCA is part of the role.

The role includes enforcing dog control legislation, handling stray dogs, investigating dog attack cases and dog related nuisance cases, working within the requirements of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. You will engage in some activities that will require you at times to use a body worn camera for evidence purposes.

You will need to be computer literate and capable of keeping accurate records. This will also include taking witness statements, conducting interviews under caution, and preparing case files for legal consideration. You will be fully trained on these aspects if you have not done these before.

You will be expected to take part in the out of hour’s rota for the collection of stray dogs on Bank Holidays for which an allowance will be paid. Working outside of normal office working hours will be necessary on occasion for which an overtime allowance is paid.

Part of this role includes the collecting of Nox Tubes for air quality monitoring and collection of water samples from homes that use private water supplies for which training will be given.

The job requires a level of physical ability to be able to work in dusty/dirty environments (with PPE), at heights (with use of a ladder), in confined spaces, close to water and in particular the confidence and ability to handle dogs.

Primarily working from home/site visits, with the main office being Market Weighton depot if needed
