Swansea Council's Parks Department is responsible for maintaining and developing the diverse range of Parks and Open Spaces within the City & County of Swansea. The service offers the community and visitors to Swansea locations the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities, improve health and well-being, participate in sports, relax, educate and play. Role Outline
Qualifications and experience are not pre-requisites. Applicants are expected to be motivated to pursue a career as a professional horticulturalist with a 'hands-on' and enthusiastic approach. Working from 08:00-16.30:00hrs Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00hrs on Friday (a working week of thirty seven hours), apprentices will be provided with PPE and will work under the supervision of highly experienced Gardeners within all Swansea Council horticultural sites.
An initial apprentice salary is paid and increases by around 25% annually to approximately £21,189 once successfully appointed.
Apprentices may expect to gain experience in a variety of areas including lawn maintenance, herbaceous and shrub cultivation, ornamental tree and shrub pruning, propagation, production of bedding, cut flower, cultivation, greenhouse culture and management, use and maintenance of machinery, infrastructure repair and maintenance, snow clearing and gritting operations and hard/soft landscaping. Whilst this list is not exhaustive, it illustrates the wide range of operations carried out in the gardens.
Apprentices are encouraged to work towards formal; industry recognised qualifications such as the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture, with day release to attend college. The Parks Service is seeking to fill one predicted vacancies permanently on successful completion of apprenticeships however whilst this is the intention it is not guaranteed.
