Opportunity

Our** Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Metrology for Building Acoustics **is an exciting post-doctoral opportunity to work on impactful research addressing noise issues in domestic dwellings.

We are looking for someone who is capable of employing cutting-edge techniques for quantifying and characterising room acoustics, material properties, and noise ingress and egress - and who is able to go beyond standardised methods and acquire higher-fidelity data than they provide.

You will work as part of the multi-disciplinary Future Homes Project (FHP), funded by the Greater Manchester Innovation Fund to accelerate delivery of new and existing net zero homes.

Notably, this includes homes built using Modern Methods of Construction (MMoC), which offer an interesting and timely opportunity to provide better acoustics for occupants.

**The role**

You will undertake research to better understand noise issues in domestic dwellings and the effect of possible mitigations.

You’ll gather a dataset on noise levels and acoustic conditions in a range of domestic properties and leverage this dataset to produce statistics on the current status quo, as well as review differences, opportunities and challenges offered by Modern Methods of Construction.

It has state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to conduct psychoacoustics research including a series of listening rooms designed for specialised critical listening, with acoustic treatment to ensure compliance with ITU standards.

These listening rooms are optimised for listening tests on loudspeakers to BS 6840-13 / IEC 268-13, and are equipped with state-of-the-art multi-channel spatial audio systems such as ITU standard layouts and Ambisonic reproduction setups, and augmented and virtual reality systems.
