This has been developed in collaboration with employers, patients and professional bodies, complying with the requirements for the NHS Modernising Scientific Careers initiative which seeks to introduce more structured career pathways for individuals who are employed within NHS scientific careers.

**Normal entry qualification requirements are**:

- Access to HE Diploma gaining 60 credits ,at least 45 achieved at level 3, of which 36 credits must be in science based units at level 3: at least 36 of these credits must be achieved at Distinction or above with the remainder at merit.
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science grade DDM.
- GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above desirable. Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths must achieve these prior to taking the End Point Assessment.

Applicants with sufficient experience and other appropriate qualifications will be considered.

Experience and knowledge of basic lung function and investigations of sleep disordered breathing is desirable.

Academic course start date September 2023

This innovative, work-based role creates an opportunity for you to develop professionally and academically, graduating as a competent Healthcare Science Practitioner working within your chosen discipline of respiratory physiology.

During your apprenticeship, your specialist knowledge will be developed in areas including anatomy and physiology and clinical investigations, providing you with the ability to understand and form links between presentation, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Work based training will enable you to develop skills in clinical techniques which will be fully supported by the respiratory physiologists within the team. Duties will include;
- Undertaking a range of routine respiratory physiology investigations
- Assist specialised physiologists in undertaking advanced respiratory physiology procedures
- Maintain clinical records in relation to activities carried out
- Perform calibration and quality control procedures on all laboratory equipment used
- Update own professional knowledge
- Participate in departmental research

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides good quality, safe and effective healthcare to the people of Cheshire and beyond.

The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008.

The results in the 2020 national NHS Staff Survey showed improvements in all elements of the safety culture theme, with 92% of respondents feeling their role made a difference to our patients. We were also recognised nationally for our workforce health and wellbeing initiatives.

The post holder will be supported to progress towards providing high quality, non-invasive respiratory diagnostic testing under supervision, gaining competencies such as;
Performance of basic respiratory and sleep assessments, including full explanation to the patient of the tests carried out & their purpose.

To lead, educate and encourage patients in required test techniques, explaining the need for full co-operation and maximum effort in performing these tests by demonstrating the same physical effort and enthusiasm.

To identify problems, potential complications and contraindications and refer back for assessment by a qualified Physiologist when necessary.

To use verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients/carers.

To draw on theoretical knowledge and practical experience to decide on the most appropriate course of action.

To assess each patient in terms of the appropriateness/ potential risks of performing the requested tests and acting accordingly.
