Our Assistant Economist will work a pattern of hybrid working with occasional visits to Exeter HQ as required.

This role is available as a permanent position however we can also consider secondment requests on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum of 22 hours per week).

As our Assistant Economist, your starting salary will be £30932.00 and you will have opportunities to progress to £33925.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band mínima.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to **£43,125** annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

**Job description**:
**The Economics and Analysis Team**

We are seeking exceptional, innovative and collegiate individuals to join a new team to **shape how the Met Office understands, quantifies, communicates its impacts.**

You will play a pivotal role in **improving our understanding of how we support and enable diverse sectors, activities and government priorities** both domestically and internationally. These include defence, Net Zero, climate change adaptation, aviation, energy, media, international development and others.

You will **gain valuable experience working within a government delivery body with wide-raging operational duties **and **an outstanding worldwide reputation**. You will build understanding of **data, future tech, meteorology** and other areas, working directly with customers and funders, including the Ministry of Defence and other government departments.

You will also consider the impacts of the Met Office’s supercomputing programme, backed by over £1bn of public funding and delivered with Microsoft.

**Working arrangements**

The **Met Office strongly supports a hybrid working approach** and in-person attendance at HQ in Exeter will be by arrangement with the line manager.

**Job Purpose**:
You will be actively involved in the establishment of economics and analysis as a new function within the Met Office, and **offer ideas and creativity** around how to do this.

You will work with the Principal Economist to shape your focus depending on experience, existing skills and interests, across the following areas:

- ** Appraisal and business cases**: Work on business cases, building on an understanding of best practice across government. You will link investments into the Met Office’s world-leading meteorological research capacity with real-world impacts;
- ** Future fiscal events**: Contribute to the Met Office’s evidence base for the next Spending Review and other fiscal events to put us in the best place to demonstrate how we fulfill our purpose. Work closely with government departments, including HM Treasury, as required.
- ** Research**: Develop the Met Office’s impacts research pipeline, identifying new areas for economic & impacts research across different sectors and activities.
- ** Evaluation**: Contribute to project and programme evaluation across the Met Office, driving quantitative approaches and best practice in evaluation.
- ** Networking**: Independently develop productive working relationships with social researchers, economists and behavioural scientists across the wider public sector;
