The Role

The School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University seeks to appoint a fixed-term Lecturer in Classics (Teaching & Scholarship) who will contribute to the teaching and supervision of students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The post will commence on 1 August 2023 for a period of 6 months.

You will contribute to the delivery of scholarship-informed modules on Latin language and literature. Moreover, you will contribute to School-wide team-taught modules, and will undertake a range of pastoral and administrative responsibilities.

Newcastle University has a long and distinguished reputation for research, scholarship, and teaching in Classics and Ancient History. Key Responsibilities
- Delivering high-quality teaching and learning materials, resources and activities to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, in line with School and Faculty teaching objectives and timetable requirements
- Supervising undergraduate and taught postgraduate students, as required
- Contributing to the delivery, planning, design, and development of modules and programmes at Subject and School level
- Contributing to the wider student experience at programme level
- Evaluating your own practice and undertaking continuing professional development in teaching
- Planning, organising and carrying out your scholarly programme, with a view to ensuring that teaching is informed by new knowledge, insight, and impactful innovation
- Engaging with innovative scholarship through appropriate media and fora (e.g. monographs, peer-reviewed journals, edited books), advancing knowledge in the field and enhancing the University’s reputation for high-quality scholarship
- Initiating or contributing to interdisciplinary collaborations at School, Faculty, and University level
- Participating in organised programmes of outreach and public engagement, as appropriate
- Promoting the University’s values in relation to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and support widening access to our programmes and facilities to people who have historically had little involvement in universities
- Undertaking a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, scholarship, and engagement
- Taking responsibility for management or administrative roles as appropriate the grade and temporary nature of the post
- Contributing to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to working groups and key committees
- Complying with University policies, including financial regulations, equal opportunities policy, Health & Safety policy, promoting race equality policy, information systems security policy, data security, intellectual property rights and safeguarding policies
- Engaging in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory
- Carrying out other duties, commensurate with the grade and temporary nature of the post, as requested by the Head of School

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- A strong record of scholarship in Latin language and literature, demonstrating international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance, and rigour
- Experience in high-quality scholarship-informed university teaching, and enthusiastic, reflective and creative pedagogy
- Experience of pastoral and student wellbeing issues
- Experience in, or demonstrable potential for, impact in scholarship and engaging with external stakeholders

Attributes and Behaviour
- High level of initiative and organisation
- Track-record of working as a good colleague and academic citizen
- Ability to work collaboratively, across disciplines, and with external partners
- Commitment to diversifying the Classics and Ancient History curriculum
- Willingness to undertake administrative duties as required
