Product Definition Engineer

Bristol, United Kingdom Rolls Royce Full time

**Product Definition Engineer**

**Bristol**

**Why Rolls-Royce?**

Exciting opportunities for Product Definition Engineers have arisen within a number of our Programmes. In all areas these roles involve working with a range of key business stakeholders to support the delivery of key programme milestones thus enabling the delivery of our Defence Combat strategy for the next 50 years. This is how we create brilliance, which we should sell by letting the facts speak for themselves.

Rolls-Royce’s customers and the company have entrusted us to deliver the future technologies, people, processes and programmes. Successful delivery of these programmes will ensure both the UK and Rolls-Royce retains combat capability, ensuring freedom of action for the UK and enabling the company to maintain our market share in the Naval, Defence Aero and combat markets.

Product Definition Engineers are responsible for carrying out Product Definition activities across new and existing products across the Defence product base, ensuring that the technical and safety integrity of a design is maintained in accordance with company procedures.

As a Product Definition Engineer your main task will be to produce and (where adequate capability has been demonstrated) check component models and technical drawings in line with company practices to meet design intent, satisfying fit, form and function of the component whilst optimising manufacture.

The role of a Product Definition Engineer includes being influential during all stages of the design cycle (e.g. creating analysis models, producing tolerance stack-ups, creating the master model and producing the component definition), manufacture of the part (e.g. supporting Design For Manufacture activities and the manufacturing buy-off process), right through to supporting parts in-service (e.g. managing and incorporating Drawing Alteration Requests, supporting concession activities and supporting in-service investigation work).

Managing and maintaining data integrity is vital to this role so attention to detail is an important quality.

As the role will involve you working in multi-disciplined teams it is essential that you have strong communication and interpersonal skills that will allow you to integrate with all people throughout the organisation, at all levels, to ensure the effective resolution of product definition related issues.

As part of a move to a more multi-skilled workforce there is potential to extend your skillset into adjacent areas such as System Design, Sub-System & Component Design, Stress, Aero and Configuration Management.

**Key Accountabilities**
- Prepare, develop and maintain the 3D master CAD model, technical drawing and relevant documentation in accordance with company procedures, engineering drawing standards, design intent (fit, form, function), manufacturing & build capability, project costs, timescales and quality requirements.
- Work as part of a multi-discipline team to ensure new and revised component definitions are fit for purpose (meets design intent, manufacturable etc.)
- The creation of specialised bespoke CAD models for analysis purposes and the management, update and incorporation of Drawing Alteration Requests.
- To produce tolerance stack-ups to aid new product creation & validation and to support in-service investigation work.
- To actively promote, encourage and support the identification and implementation of continuous improvement (of tools, processes, methods and guidance material).

**Requirements**:

- Have appropriate engineering experience in conceptual and detail design, detail drafting methods and a good understanding of manufacturing techniques.
- Experienced in using Siemens NX and Teamcenter is essential.
- Experienced in using ISO/British Standard and/or ASME Y14.5M drawing standards is essential.
- Ability to plan and deliver to challenging deadlines, and to work accurately and at pace.

**Desirable**
- Appreciation of gas turbine operation and System Design concepts are advantageous.
- The chosen individual will be expected to create new Component Definitions in a wholly digital format (Model Based Definitions). Therefore this capability would be advantageous.
