**Deputy Head of Legal (Employment)**

**Role and Responsibilities**

In this role you will get the opportunity to work over a variety of areas and tasks in a supportive and collaborative environment. Reporting to the UKRI Legal Director and General Counsel, you will have responsibility for ensuring effective provision of sound, pragmatic and business-focused legal advice on the full spectrum of employment law issues. This will range from day-to-day advice to HR staff on casework, including advice on equality law issues; to advice on wider employment policies affecting the organisation and harmonisation of terms and conditions following the COSoP transfer of staff into UKRI in 2018. Your role may also extend to employment litigation ranging from single unfair dismissal cases to multi-party equal pay claims. In addition, you will manage a small team of lawyers who advise on employment, public law issues and litigation.

**Person Specification**

Skilled and experienced employment lawyer with the ability to understand public sector policy drivers and work effectively within the statutory framework applicable to a non-departmental public body
Demonstrable technical aptitude

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to influence and work collaboratively

'Can-do' individual who is self-motivated and able to plan and manage a varied workload effectively

Strong attention to detail with a proven track record of meeting deadlines and effectively prioritising and managing competing demands

Strong experience of advising clients at a senior level, as well as demonstrable leadership and line management experience and the ability to provide effective quality assurance of the team’s legal advice on employment, public law and litigation matters.

Qualified to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales

**Interview Criteria**

**Essential**:
Strong experience of providing sound, pragmatic and business
- focused legal advice on a range of both contentious and non
- contentious employment law matters, at senior level
Experience of managing a legal team and developing staff

Ability to lead and provide effective quality assurance of the work of the team across a wide range of legal matters relating to employment, public law and litigation

Reliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk

The ability to think strategically and creatively, see legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly

Sound analytical skills, and the ability to produce timely and fit for purpose advice based on sound legal research

Ability to build strong relationships with clients and champion the work of the Legal TeamA clear appreciation of the role of lawyers in a governmental body and a sound understanding of the implications of UKRI’s status as a non-departmental public body.
