We are looking for Bank Occupational Therapy assistants to join the Occupational Therapy Team at University Hospitals Sussex. We are wanting to build up a bank of Occupational Therapy assistants who may be available to work at times where we have vacancies or sickness absence that we need to cover. This role would suit Occupational Therapy students who may be available during holidays and weekends, or anyone with previous experience as a therapy assistant who does not want to be working fulltime but are able to offer ad hoc hours as needed.

You will be working closely with the ward therapists to help patients progress functionally, and to assess their support needs for discharge.

Acute hospitals are an extremely busy environment and suit organised and resilient individuals.

The Royal Sussex County Hospital is about to expand into its new build premises which will be an amazing environment to be working in. There are 7 specialised OT teams on site.

The Princess Royal Hospital is a smaller site with just 3 specialist teams.

Newhaven is a rehabilitation unit with an OT team.

Duties will vary depending on the team you are working with but will include the following
- Gathering baseline information about new patients
- Carrying out treatment plans as advised by the Occupational Therapists
- Assisting the therapists in the assessment and treatment of patients
- To issue daily living equipment and demonstrate its use as agreed by an Occupational Therapist
- To assist in basic stock checks, equipment ordering and cleaning and maintenance of equipment
- General administrative duties and data entry

There are other Occupational Therapy Assistants employed by the Trust, providing opportunity for peer support and peer learning.

We provide comprehensive in service training and mentorship and facilitate the use of personal development plans, to identify learning needs, so that we can provide bespoke support.

- In conjunction with a relevant Occupational Therapist, to implement agreed client interventions
- To independently carry out delegated Occupational Therapy interventions, for example washing and dressing assessments, kitchen assessments and cognitive assessments.
- To ensure safety of clients within the department, ward or any other setting during the course of Occupational Therapy intervention.
- To undertake pre-operative phone assessments with patients as needed and order any equipment required..
- To attend selected clinical meetings at the request of the Occupational Therapist and collect information for the Therapist / Team.
- To adhere to the Trust’s Infection Control Policy and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times.
- To understand how the work undertaken by the post holder relates to and affects the work of others, in order to achieve the best outcomes in terms of effective processes and quality of service.
- To adopt a flexible approach to working within the service eg: supporting cross team and cross site working as required
- To support the possible development of a 7 day service in the future
- To observe and report back to the relevant Occupational Therapist on clients’progress, ability and general approach to treatment.
- To verbally report on a client’s progress to relevant client review meetings in conjunction with the responsible Occupational Therapist.
- To provide clear feedback to the relevant Occupational Therapist in the event their absence.
