A waste portering service is provided in accordance with Trust policies, procedures and practices, which is responsive to ward and department requirements.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, provide an effective, timely delivery and collection service which supports all aspects of clinical and non-clinical services.

Provide a high quality waste collection service.

The waste portering team provide a comprehensive service to the hospital in all weathers. They have considerable contact with staff, visitors, members of the public and contractors.

The waste porter is a front line member of staff who assists in providing this essential service.

To collect general, clinical waste -cytotoxic refuse and sharp boxes from all areas on site

To carry out all tasks with due regard to Transport, Waste and Health & Safety Legislation.

To report any suspicious incidents and assist where necessary

Ability to work as part of a team and also able to use own initiative

Previous experience of working within waste and waste transport desirable

Flexible approach and display a can do attitude

Ability to communicate at all levels

Good time management skills

Flexible to working hours as there may be occasions for unsociable hours to be worked

When required, assist with low level security requests

Appropriate response to an incident or major incident in accordance with Trust Policy.

Make sure effective communication is maintained within the Waste Portering and colleagues and staff.

PURPOSE

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To collect general, clinical waste -cytotoxic refuse and sharp boxes from all areas on site

To carry out all tasks with due regard to Transport, Waste and Health & Safety Legislation.

To report any suspicious incidents and assist where necessary

Complete a safety check of the Trust vehicle prior to use

To carry out routine waste collections as required

Staff, patients and visitors who require assistance receive it in an appropriate and courteous manner.

Ensure that all work and ad-hoc work e.g. waste equipment, etc. is carried out following the Trust manual handling procedures.

Report any defects in equipment or fabrication following correct procedures.

Attend all training sessions as required.

Exchange all waste bins on request, following appropriate procedures.

Transporting waste bins to and from wards and departments. All movement must be in accordance with Trust moving and handling policy.

Waste compounds are secure and available in accordance with opening and lockup procedures

Maintain an awareness of appropriate Trust and local policies and procedures and ensure that they are adhered to including an awareness of the implication of the Health and Safety at Work Act and assist in its implementation regarding waste collection and storage transportation.

Provide a timely and effective waste service, segregating as required.

Undertake any other duties appropriate to the post.

To work alone and as part of the waste team to ensure a successful waste collection and delivery operation on Trust sites.
