**The research project**

We are seeking an enthusiastic Research Fellow / Senior Research Assistant with experience of undertaking social research in a community setting to work on a 15-month project funded by the National Institute for Health and Social Care Three Schools Dementia Programme. The aim of the project is to examine access to social farms in England for people living with dementia who live at home, to help improve the evidence base for this relatively new and expanding form of support. Social farms (also known as care farms) are defined as the use of commercial farms or agricultural landscapes to provide health and social benefits through farming, following a facilitated or structured programme on a regular basis. Research shows that people living with dementia value being on a social farm because it provides a chance to be in nature, enjoy familiar and traditional activities (such as feeding animals and tending to plants) and experience an everyday (rather than a care) setting. However, most attendees tend to be younger, married men. Our project will add knowledge about access to social farms by people living with dementia, including women and people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

**The role**

Working under the direction of co-lead investigators Dr Ruth Bartlett and Dr Alex Kaley (University of Essex) and line managed by Dr Bartlett (School of Health Sciences) you will play a key role in recruiting participants, organizing, and conducting qualitative interviews with different groups including people with dementia and their family carers, social farm staff, and health and social care professionals, contributing to two online focus groups and analysing qualitative data. You will also play a key role in designing, administering, and analysing a quantitative survey. You will contribute where necessary to project management tasks, drafting briefing reports, articles, and presenting results at conferences.

**About you**

You will have a good first degree and postgraduate qualification in a relevant health or social science discipline (e.g., health sciences, sociology, social policy, social psychology), and some experience of health or social science research. You will have demonstrable research skills such as interviewing, qualitative data analysis, and/or designing surveys methods. You will need to be able to work independently and as part of the project team comprising co-investigators from the Universities of Southampton (Dr Ruth Bartlett & Dr Sara McKelvie), Essex (Dr Alex Kaley), Birmingham (Dr Denise Tanner) and Lancaster (Dr Faraz Ahmed). You will need to work effectively with key partners including Dementia Adventure and social farm managers, PPI representatives, and healthcare professionals to develop, deliver and disseminate the work of the research project. Willingness to travel is essential. Fluency in a South Asian language is desirable.
