**Job Purpose**
This role sits within Research Computing as a Service (RCaaS), a brand-new function within the University of Glasgow, and a key enabler for the creation and delivery of world changing research. RCaaS offers a wide range of computing services and support to researchers across the University.
The primary responsibilities of the role are associated with the support of research computing in the new College of Medicine, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) Research Facilities. The facilities will bring together equipment and expertise into a single unit. This unit will provide a world class research and teaching environment that will offer cutting edge support to the MVLS research community.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**
1. Responsible for contributing to the development of overall Research Computing as a Service strategy for provision of research biological computing support and related computing services.
2. In conjunction with colleagues in IT Services, ensure utility, efficiency and integrity of the MVLS Research Facility computing environment by proactively monitoring and responding to or escalating hardware, software and networking issues in a timely manner.
3. Work with colleagues in IT Services to provision new operating systems on virtual machine farms, tying into network storage, ensuring end user computing requirements are satisfied.
-6. Produce and maintain system documentation to facilitate knowledge transfer
7. Design, maintain and test backup systems to make sure data is recoverable
8. Provide data management leadership, assisting with the creation, management and use of research-ready data and safeguarding the integrity and value of data outputs
9. In conjunction with colleagues in IT Services, gather ongoing requirements for new hardware and software systems, along with specifying and recommending new purchases
10. Respond to and act on support requests in a timely manner
11. Collaborate with IT services colleagues to inform the installation and networking of new IT hardware, including large compute servers and storage arrays.
12. Collaborate with RCaaS colleagues in the transfer of systems knowledge to a wider pool in order to enable operational resilience.
13. Collaborate with the MVLS Research Computing Facility to share and encourage best practices on large-scale biological research computing.

**Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience**

**Knowledge/qualifications**

**Essential**:

A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles OR
Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (ordinary/honours degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Knowledge of computing systems, such as computer hardware, operating systems, computer networking and virtual machines, suitable to ensure the optimisation, utility and resilience of research software and data.
A3 Specialist knowledge of Unix-like operating systems, particularly Linux.
A4 Knowledge of Windows operating systems.
A5 Knowledge of best practice approaches for data management.
A6 Knowledge of best practice approaches for ensuring software sustainability.

**Desirable**:

B1 PhD (completed or near completion) in a relevant discipline.
B2 A degree in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology.
B3 Knowledge of large, complex, heterogeneous data and their use within biological research.
B4 Knowledge of bioinformatics pipelines.

**Skills**

**Essential**:

C1 Excellent skills in computer systems management, including command line interfaces.
C2 Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in team settings with staff from multiple disciplines, as well as individually.
C4 Proven ability to assess priorities and manage own workload effectively within strict timelines, and to be flexible about taking new responsibilities as they emerge and as reasonably required by RCaaS leadership.

D1 Skilled in the analysis of computer systems performance, including I/O, memory and CPU monitoring and problem diagnosis. D2 Skilled in the analysis, management and use of large volume datasets. D3 Skilled in the provision of virtual machines.

**Experience**

**Essential**:

E1 Relevant experience with appropriate qualification or significant evidence of progression and development gained through relevant work experience on technical projects.
E2 Demonstrable experience of managing Linux computer servers.
E3 Proven experience of engaging proactively with potentially diverse and multi-disciplinary collaborators.

**Desirable**:

F1 Experience dealing with large bioinformatic data.
