We have an exciting an unusual opportunity for a graduate from a healthcare related degree with experience of the impacts of cultural and ethnic differences in access to healthcare. This fixed term post has been funded by the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Cancer Alliance Bursary Award to develop and improve cultural competencies in Cancer Care service delivery. The project has been developed by the Clinical Health Psychology service and leadership and managerial supervision will be provided as part of the project. It is therefore suitable for a graduate psychologist progressing towards Clinical Psychology training.

With the support of the Consultant Clinical Psychologist, to support the objectives of a fixed term project in identifying cultural competencies specific to communicating effectively and compassionately with people from ethnic minorities in the Bradford Cancer Service. To deliver language and cultural interpretation skills where appropriate and to liaise independently with appropriate experts in interpreting and cultural competency from different ethnic groups. To deliver training and support to cancer care clinicians within BTHFT and to evaluate and disseminate the findings of the project.

Clinical/ Communication

To project manage the work in quality improvement for health equity in cancer care in Bradford.

To utilise effective, sensitive and compassionate communication skills with a range of professional and non-professional adults both individually and in groups to elicit and develop a set of cultural competencies.

To communicate effectively with patients receiving cancer treatment in a highly sensitive manner. Frequently, communication requires discussion about highly emotive issues such as adjustment to diagnosis, loss, emotional regulation, death and dying.

To work as an effective, integrated member of relevant multi-disciplinary teams.

To disseminate findings from the quality improvement project to a variety of audiences in a range of settings.

Teaching, training and supervision

1. To participate in regular clinical supervision.

2. To develop systematic learning and development opportunities for other members of the clinical health psychology service as required.

To provide advice, consultation and training medical and nursing staff using effective communication skills and multi-media presentations

Research and service evaluation

To interpret, evaluate and implement findings from previous research in cultural competencies to support the project

To collect, analyse and evaluate data relevant to the quality improvement project

To participate in Clinical Health Psychology’s Clinical Governance activities.

General

To evaluate and make decisions about project interventions, training models, and evaluation methods

To organise own timetable in line with project timeline

To follow the policies of the Department of Clinical Health Psychology.

To maintain the highest standards of clinical and non-clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with policies and procedures of the Trust and other relevant agencies.

To ensure that information written in medical records is timely and appropriate.

To use computer software to develop or create reports, documents or materials for presentations.

To participate in meetings.

To ensure careful use of all department facilities and resources.

To contribute to the development and maintenance of high professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external continuing professional development training and development programmes, in consultation with the post holder’s line manager.

To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice healthcare and contribute across the service by exercising the skills of a reflexive and reflective practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field

To manage workload to meet the departmental targets for the post.

To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to the specific client/patient population.

To participate in the Clinical Health Psychology Department staff appraisal process and departmental meetings.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The post holder is professionally and managerially accountable to the Consultant Clinical Psychologist or Head of Department.
