The post holder provides technical dosimetry services across a number of work areas within Radiotherapy Physics, primarily Dosimetry, Brachytherapy and Treatment Planning. Deployment will be according to service need and it is anticipated that work will cover more than one of these areas in a given period of time. You will work independently within the Departmental Quality System, using procedures to guide your own work, taking initiative to solve options and referring to Supervisor when necessary.

The post-holder will be expected to have Registration or to undertake post-graduate development to enable registration with the relevant body, currently the Register of Clinical Technologists. Support will be provided across all relevant aspects of the syllabus to assist this aim in line with the IPEM RCT equivalence route.

There will be some requirement for flexible hours of working. If and when the Centre provides a wider regional service work may be required in the associated hospitals in the locality.

The post-holder works with other Scientists and Technologists in the dosimetric verification of treatment machines, treatment planning and assessing patient dose, reporting any discrepancies immediately for further assessment. Main areas of work include:
a. Day-to-day supervision of activities and contribution to training of junior dosimetrists and other staff undergoing training in dosimetry & brachytherapy. Patient dose measurement for confirmation of dose delivery.

b. Brachytherapy planning and assistance with delivery and quality assurance.

c. Radiotherapy Treatment Planning.

d. Monitoring the outputs and performance of equipment involved in the planning, delivery and verification of radiotherapy (e.g. Linacs and associated imaging devices, CT-Simulators, brachytherapy equipment and associated imaging devices).

e. The use of delicate equipment often in conjunction with large phantoms which simulate treatment of patients.

f. Planning and undertaking scheduled testing to ensure that dosimeters remain within calibration.

g. Checking calculations made by others, especially those related to patient dose.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

The Radiotherapy Service at Velindre Cancer Centre is undergoing significant transformation, which will continue for several years. Currently there are 8 linear accelerators (4 Varian and 4 Elekta) and an Elekta Flexitron for brachytherapy treatments. A replacement programme of all treatment devices, Oncology Information Systems and Treatment Planning Systems is underway; the first Varian Halcyon machine was installed in January 2023 with another being installed in September 2023. A radiotherapy satellite centre is due to open in Abergavenny in 2024, with a new Velindre Cancer Centre due to open in 2025. Radiotherapy equipment at the new centre will include Varian BRAVOS brachytherapy, 6 Varian Halcyon machines, 2 Varian Truebeams (HD) and a dedicated research machine.
