Is problem solving ‘Your Thing’?
We are looking for an excellent problem solver to work within our maintenance team, to fault find and repair our trains to ensure our customers get the best possible service, through an excellently maintained, reliable fleet.
At Northern, we play a vital role connecting millions of people to work, leisure and education opportunities.
We operate 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England. But our vision is about more than just train travel. It’s about setting a new standard for customer experiences. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and get stuck in to making our customers’ lives easier. A place that goes out of its way to create incredible opportunities for everyone to grow and be the best we can be every single day.
So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.
**About the Role**:
You will report to our TrainCare Centre Production Manager and work alongside our maintenance team to keep our trains in service and fault find when things go wrong.
It’s an exciting time to join our engineering team, as we are transforming and developing skillsets, to help us get the right people, on the right units, at the right time. You’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning and including nights, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 60 minutes’ drive of our Allerton TrainCare Centre.
If this sounds like your thing, we’d love to hear from you.
**Key responsibilities**:
This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:
- You’ll attend call outs to failed trains, to help our customers get on the move quicker
- Helping to improve the reliability of our trains, through regular maintenance and servicing
- You’ll produce reports and provide feedback to other colleagues and work as part of the bigger team
- You’ll play a big part in our outstations to complete fault finding and repairs of our rolling stock
- Ensuring compliance with all working instructions, standards and rules and regulations, whilst assisting in the refuelling and service of our trains in various TrainCare Centres.
**About You**:
We expect you to have good technical knowledge Apprentice trained or an NVQ level 3 -in mechanical/electrical qualification and have previous experience working on train systems, including electrics, hydraulics, air systems, diesel engines and fault finding. What’s really important is an ability to work as part of a team and to be able to think on your feet, in sometimes demanding situations.
We’re also looking for the following:
- Excellent communication skills
- Confidence to build relationships with a wide variety of people and teams
- The ability to prioritise and be adaptable when these priorities can change
- Experience in managing workload and showing initiative where necessary
- Someone who is hardworking and confident in their engineering abilities to work with the wider teams
And don’t forget that our selection process includes a safety critical medical assessment, that covers general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing.
**Our Benefits**:
Because we value our people and reward hard work, we’ve created a benefits package that we think you’ll love. So, you’ll be able to make the most of:
- Opportunities to progress and grow - including comprehensive training schemes and a range of online learning courses.
- Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
- 75% discount with other Train Operating Companies - after 2 years with us, you’ll also get discounted travel on many other rail services in the UK and Europe.

- A generous holiday entitlement - our holiday entitlements can help you feel like you can get away too.
