Healthcare Assistant

To work as a multi-skilled member of the Children’s Emergency team, within the Children’s Emergency department (Children’s ED) and Children’s Outpatient Department (COPD); maintaining high standards of practice and promoting the philosophy of child and family centered care.
He/she will deliver care that has already been planned by a clinician or a Registered Nurse and will be skilled in taking appropriate action to ensure that outcomes are achieved.
He/she will be competent, confident and adaptable and will require mínimal supervision from the registered professionals within the team.
Assist the patients in meeting activities of daily living, for example assisting patients to access and use toilet facilities, including the collection and disposal of body waste
Assist patients to maintain and improve their mobility as directed by a qualified member of staff, for example helping patients to mobilise with frames, or crutches
Have an awareness of pain/pain control and assist in minimising clients discomfort, by reporting to a qualified member of staff
Support the assessment of patient’s care needs, for example through:
**Observation of vital signs**: Blood Pressure, Pulse, Respiratory rate, oxygen saturations, temperature, Urine testing, Weight and Blood Glucose monitoring, recording of ECG and report findings to qualified member of staff
To participate in managing selected babies, children and young people under close supervision of a qualified child’s nurse.

Provide first aid as requested by qualified member of staff after initial assessment
Aware of the location of emergency equipment and procedures, and assist the registered nurse to deal with emergency situations cardiac/respiratory arrest.
Clean and re-dress wounds on qualified member of staffs guidance
Undertakes simple wound closure (e.g. adhesive stripes) and removal of sutures under the direction of a qualified member of staff
Following appropriate training and assessment, applies Plaster of Paris and/or other splinting methods under the direction of a qualified member of staffs guidance
Following appropriate training and assessment be competent in venepucture and cannulation of infants and children.
Assist with clinical procedures as requested
Completes various discharge treatments as prescribed by a qualified member of staff
